Octavia Engine Light

Featured Replies

Hi all.....Have eventually acquired an Octy after the 'Felly went tits-up and it wasn't worth spending money to get it repaired. However, one problem with the Octy I have

noticed is that the 'testing engine electronics' warning light (engine warning light/engine management light ?) does not come on at all. Having not a clue about the Octavia should this light illuminate every time the ignition is turned on or is it not required ? All other warning lights seem to be ok. i would appreciate any help on this, and if it should be on any suggestions as to where to look to find possible cause of failure. It looks like Haynes calls it the 'engine management' warning light in their wiring diagram but not sure where it goes to/from. Can anyone shed any light on this ?

As always any help/advice much appreciated.

Thanks/regards.

Rob

EML should illuminate with the ignition on, & go out when the engine is started.

Thanks Paul. I wonder why it doesn't then.

It's not unheard of for people to remove the EML bulb to hide an issue. See if you can find a member in your region to do an instruments check with VCDS/VAGCOM.

Thanks. I will. However, the Haynes book (my only reference as I know nowt about the Octy), classes the EML bulb as a non-renewable LED.

Insulating tape on the inside of the instruments will also stop the light showing.

I'm beginning to think there might be mischief afoot and the EML has deliberately been extinguished ! !

Should the EPC light also illuminate on this model when the ignition is switched on ? After reading many posts on here I am convinced my car is going into 'limp' mode and wonder if the engine management lights have deliberately been interfered with to hide the fact there may be an engine problem. How would that be done ? I will also try the Mr Muscle trick on the turbo to see if I can improve performance.

Desperate for info on the warning lights though !!

Not all codes trigger the EML. A few years ago I had the dreaded 17705 code coming up on my Mkiv Golf Anniversary. It was putting the car into limp mode, but the EML never came on when it did.

Epc and eml should show on key being turned to ignition point.

If in doubt get it scanne

I had the car scanned at my local Skoda dealer and the computer came up with the following two problems;

1. 17965 P1557 0354 Boost pressure regulation control limit exceeded. (Sporadic fault).

2. 01039 030 Coolant temperature guage sender G2. Open circuit or short to positive. (Sporadic)

The car is definitely going into limp mode usually when accelerating through 60ish in 4th. Struggles to get any faster after 65. When the ignition is switched off and then back on again it seems to clear the limp mode and it seems to go ok again -until the next time.

Skoda have quoted £120 to sort the temp. fault and £145 to sort boost fault or £1293 if the turbo needs replacing.

I have also tried to remove the steering wheel and instrument panel (using the Haynes method) to check the engine warning lights but can't get either off or out.

Further suggestions/ideas/remedies would be most welcome.

Regards Rob

Genuine coolant temp sensor is about £25 from Dealer/TPS, & takes 5 mins to fit.

17965/P1557/005463 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation

Possible Symptoms

  • Reduced power output
  • Limp mode

Possible Causes

  • Boost Pressure too High
  • Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected, blocked or leaking
  • Charger Pressure Control defective
    • VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck

[*]Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective

Possible Solutions

  • Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
  • Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
  • Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
    • Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles

I vote sticky vanes in the turbo and the cause of the limp mode.

Thanks for the Info guys. Will check all suggestions out. However, still hoping for ideas as to why the EPC and EML lights not coming on .(Apart from double bulb failure that is).

Regards Rob.

You can do an output test on the instruments on VCDS group 17 IIRC. It'll light all the bulbs up in the cluster.

Thanks Paul. Will look in to that.
