Google Apps Migration

Featured Replies

Have any of you guys migrated over to Google Apps?

Using their Exchange migration tool, I can upload a test PST file, and it adds the data into the mailbox, however instead of putting the mail in the Inbox, it creates a label with the name of the PST file, and creates another inbox within there.

Surely it should be straight forward to do?

Here's a screenshot of the issue. The below was migrated from a mailbox called Outlook.pst.

We have migrated, all our students went over to it....maybe 18 months ago? I'm pretty sure we did the migration via IMAP though, there are loads of tools for doing this type of migration once you've enabled IMAP for your apps accounts. You could always try that cos the other data such as calendars and tasks in the PST won't go anywhere anyway?

Some of our users are IMAP, and theirs migrates absolutely fine, its the ones who just currently have POP downloaded to a local file.

Using their migration tool, the calendars in outlook do get imported.

Thinking about it though, perhaps this isn't such a bad thing, as it gives the inbox a completely clean start.

More testing is needed I think :)

Ah, I wasn't aware that Google could now handle calendar data; I can see now why a PST import is more valuable. Also didn't know anyone in the world still used POP, it's bloody awful in this day and age! :D

Alternatively, as a (fairly horrible, I'll admit) kludge, how about importing the PST file and then using an IMAP tool to shuffle the data around afterwards (i.e. do a migration from/to the same account but changing the folder root and ignoring any folder called "/Outlook"). I felt almost dirty even typing that, but depends how important it is to get Inbox->Inbox, you might have to start thinking a bit creatively :p

Unless it's an easy fix, to be honest I might just leave it as it is, and let the users reshuffle their labels around.

The migration is going to be a long enough process as it is.

And I agree that POP is bloody awful! It's been well overdue that we junk our current mail server

Just import the users mail back into your mail server (not sure what you are running?) and then use the google imap migration as you did you for your other users.
