Stiff brake pedal

Featured Replies

Just got into my car to go home and the brake pedal is rock solid! Pressing the pedal has no effect on braking at all, unless I press down like the hulk then I slowly come to a stop!

Im thinking brake servo, any ideas?

**** knows how Im going to get it to a garage, the nearest is 3 miles away down a massive hill!!!

check the vacuum pipes going to the servo, a split one would cause such symptoms.

How do you check them mate? Ive tried to have a look but theres hardly any room lol

Very common for them to split on pretty much all vag cars. if you know what a brake servo is, check the one vacume pipe that comes from that, where it joins to the engine and has a sort of rippled edge on it, it might be split / have holes in it.

Thanks mate, will have a look in the morning, how can I do a temp repair if it is split?

Depends how bad it is.

Wrap some tape round it?

Get abit of slightly bigger pipe, cut a slit down the side of it so it will open up, wrp it around the split and cable tie around it in a few places.

Should be easy to remove and replace on your driveway as a DIY job.

Mine has split also mate, works find going at speed but around town it is so hard to press and barely slows me ! .. I found it was the brake servo pipe that comes off the back of the engine at the right hand aided you can easily see it. New brake servo pipe is £24 from skoda as you can't just buy the part with the split in you have to buy the whole thing !

It runs from the Tandem pump around the back of the block to just under the brake fluid resevoir.

You should see it, it has a join just after the tandem, mine split on there, not that noticeable at first but deffo shagged.

I forgot to mention mine is also split at the join but I just haven't had time to change it yet...

You probably get intermitent vacuum issues then dude? That's how mine was, it used to love doing it when coming off onto a motorway slip road @ 70mph

Found it, on that little valve thing under the air intake hose!

It's the long pipe that's split. I just cut the split part off, heated it up and then pushed it back on :)

But the small pipe from that valve to the block is completely knackered! It's been previously taped up on one side but the other side is a ticking time bomb before that goes pop too!

Does anybody know the part number for the smaller pipe?

you can't buy any of the pipes separate you have to buy the full pipe from skoda I had too. Be better off going to a scrap yard or it'll be costing you £24 for the full pipe.

Its £24......

just go get a new one and then you dont have the hassle of a scrap yard + you know it will last forever and never need doing again.

Id rather buy the full pipe mate, I do alot of travelling, cant risk that again not to mention brakes are far too important to skrimp and save on.

Appreciate everyones help :)
