flat spotted tyres

Featured Replies

For a few months now ive noticed quite bad road noise from the rear of the yeti. Its like a booming noise. It went when I had my winters on but with the summers on its back again and today I noticed banding on the inside of both rear tyres and they feel like 50 pence pieces. Has anyone experienced this or have a possible explanation for the flat spots ? The tyres are Goodyear excellence. I phones Rainworth skoda who want to take a look at them but told me its not covered in the warranty.

Hi, without seeing them I would guess it could be a number of issues. It could be a rear alignment fault, although would have thought the winter tyres would have also worn in the same way if this was the case. Wheel balance or tyre pressures may also be in the frame, hope you find the answer

Tyre flat spots might occur for a number of reasons. Running them underinflated might be the cause, as Andyspan suggests, but so could leaving the vehicle standing for a length of time (particularly if the tyres are underinflated). Locking up the brakes and skidding is another potential cause. Skoda warranty won't cover the tyres.

Are you describing the same phenomenon as is quite common on golf/octavia? same basic floorpan. A sawtoothing on the inner edge of the rear tyres? If so this is an alignment problem. Mostly cured/deminished by using the revised rear camber settings. Some makes of tyres seem more susceptable than others.

Mine was sorted by a four wheel alignment, done properly. The decrease in tyre noise, wear and fuel consumption has more than paid for it to be done.

Dealers usually farm the job out, and from reports on here, you're probably best finding your own specialist.

This reply is absolutely spot on. I had the same problem with my Octavia, for a while I thought it was wheel bearing faults on the rear. The dealer sent it out to be professionally re-aligned and it came back like a new car. So much quieter and the drive improved some what.

Had problems with some winter Avon's showing signs of premature ageing, which the manufacturer is looking into as we speak. So if no fault with the car, then it might be worth getting on to Goodyear.

Im booked in with skoda today. They said they were interested to take a look at them. I checked my pressures yesterday and the rear offside was 35 psi and the nearside was 38 psi. Thats the last time I use a digital air pump from a petrol station. I wonder if its partly that plus the tyres which do seem a bit naff.
