The Mercedes Yeti sized competitor ("concept")

Featured Replies

Same length as a Yeti but that tiny little body on those huge wheels looks, well, tiny. Maybe two suitcases in the boot and its full. But then it is just a tarted up Nissan Puke competitor this. It is supposedly a concept but all that will change is the seat fabric, no roofrail mounted spot lights, normal sized wheels and things like that.

Peculiarly what it looks like most to me is an Infiniti FX50!!! Which is no bad thing in the mean stakes.

They both have equally small boots compared to the size of the car though.

+1.

I love the silver colour, but I am biased

Looks quite snouty which appeals.

It's a bit like a jacked up Z4 (if you lob the roof off and squint very hard)

Interior is stupid, i've never really understood why they do concept interiors like this.

Better effort than the Nissan abomination but the price is bound to be an issue.

It's going to walk a very fine line before ending up in Evoque territory.

Sorry...but I dont see the point of these threads. Mercedes, Citroen,Opel, Hyundai, Peugeot ect ect ect 'Yeti competitors' ?????....these cars are not competitors
they are not the same type of car.
They are 'Glammed up' SUV's blah blah blah. They will be outdated as soon as you buy them. In fact, what is the point of these cars????

The yeti is a competitor to the 'Landrover' with a lot more refinement and class. Maybe I am wrong. For me its a 'utility vehicle' that fits many purposes........and 'bling' is not one.

Please enough.

Sorry matey... but money talks in this world.

Yes (for the wrong reasons) ....big sigh

I parked up to a 'Peugeot' (something or other SUV) this morning, Sparkling ''sickenly' clean....in fact I am sure that car will never in its life time get dirty or 'trundle up a dirt track' for that matter..go off-road, do 'some work' that it was designed to do.

Mine was covered in mud. I looked at this car and thought, where do I put my 'bike', 'Skis', Caraven (maybe not), or anything else for that matter without making the car 'not' look 'the part'. I hope you see the point I am trying to make. The Yeti is a 'utlity' vehicle'...plain and simple.

If you think none of these cars I post about are Yeti competitors DON'T READ the threads I post.

I like your threads...I meant 'enough' in comparing the Yeti to these cars. My opinion....probably not others. For those who are deciding, buy a Golf GTI, much better car !!!...but crap in the mud/snow.

Yup I do! Phew. :hi: We are on the same page.

Now back OT: I really totally and utterly can't stand the latest Mercedes design direction with slashes on the sides of everything and big gaping mouths (seen the new Mercedes E-class?!?!) but this GLA... hmmm. I'm strangely liking it. BUT then huge wheels on any car make it look good. I'll wait for final judgement after seeing one with mere (yes TP, mere) 18" wheels.

ANYTHING on sale within a person's budget is a competitor. I'm just narrowing it down to small 4x4 class ones just to keep it slightly relevant to the Yeti section of this forum. These are VERY MUCH the same sort of car and every magazine compares them to each other. The most basic of Freelanders start at £23,000 and the most basic Evoque at £29,000 - so you really think those are the ONLY two competitors to a Yeti?!?!

This. Absolutely.

I'm considering a change, possibly as a company car or a private purchase, and would have around £25k to spend either way.

I have no strong preferences over what type of vehicle I buy and there's a lot that would meet my needs.

My short list has a few traditional cars like the Octavia but I'm also tempted by a convertible or an SUV style vehicle.

The Yeti isn't what I'm after for a couple of reasons, but other 4x4 styled cars could be.

I'm waiting for a closer look at the next SX4, the 2008 and Capture, plus the Mk3 VRS and if any of them tempt me enough I'll make a purchase.

<edit>

Oh, the Merc looks great

Edited by Dr Zoidberg

That Merc will sell in big numbers.......

Lots of people want SUV's, they are one of the sectors that is not in decline.

Lots of people would have a Mercedes if they could afford it.

Combine both and I think they will have a winner, whatever its looks.

A TapaTalk enabled phone was used to write this...

The Infiniti FX50 ain't a looker in pictures and it's even worse in the flesh (IMHO). Hence the offers available on them.

I was reading in last weeks Auto Express, regarding an article on the "supposed" BMW X4 SUV, it was stating that the only growth market in the Auto industry is the SUV segment, at the rate of 10% per annum, and that every Car maker is focusing their future sales on this segment of the market.

Johann, keep the reports coming they are well worth a read.

Tony

It is made by Mercedes so therefore will have issues and rust away. Will be over priced too.

I quite like that. :bandit:

Me too. :D

Wouldn't buy one though because it's a Mercedes.

Which doesn't bode well for build quality and reliability in my personal experience.

I like it too, thus far.

As for what is a "competitor" for the Yeti, I agree with those who've said that there are a lot of buyers who look at a very wide range of cars. Up against Yeti no 2 for me were the Superb estate, the Evoque, Jaguar XF, Merc C class estate and I even tried the Infiniti G37H. All were good in some respects, but for me the Yeti had the fewest weaknesses. When I next change I'll certainly be trying a GLA (likely including the AMG one) along with a few others. I won't be trying a Juke, i35, Sportage, Mokka or most of the other obvious Yeti competitors because they don't "grab" me. If the baby Jaguar estate is out then that'll be on my "try" list.

Fundamentally I want something smallish, quickish (a CR170 is quickish enough, for reference - I know "quick" is a relative term), comfy, fun to drive and with the ability to carry a decent range of cargo.

Like most of the new offerings it has a rear door with about a 45 degree slope.

Where would the Dog Box fit ?

What Dog Box?

Not everyone has a dog, and some people prefer a more stylish rear end to a vertical tailgate.

Buy the one that suits your needs, or strap it to the roof :)

The sloped back doesn't put me off enormously - I more often carry long thin stuff than big boxy stuff. My guess is that it'll improve aerodynamics a bit.

Love the look of it but my concern would be that the amount of tech & options I've got for £22k on a brand new Yeti would cost about £30k on this or many of the competitors in this market place.

I'm not going in a box ... the corner is bad enough!

And of the course a pic of the dash, which is so practical with my wellies on.
