Steering Rack Bush Fitting

Featured Replies

I am trying to fit the Superpro bush shown below, I have done a search on here and also with Google but have been unsuccessful in finding any detailed build info for doing it with everything in situ.

I realise that the easiest way is to drop the sub frame and that seems to be the preferred option for most people who have done this mod'. Car is up on ramps so access to the area is not a problem.

I would appreciate feedback from anyone who have done it without dropping s/frame and what method was used.

I cleaned the area with loads of WD40 and loosened the clamping strap (both bolts still engaged by a few threads) but couldn't lever the old bush out sideways. I suspect that I may need to remove the clamping strap first, I noticed that the strap has 2 studs going thru' a brkt that secures a pipe. The brkt has slots so it appears that the strap could be moved towards the road wheel and removed, then the old bush levered out, yes?.

Thanks

Here's a really big photo of the rack so you can see the shape of the bracket etc. Might help you.

It is pretty straight forward buddy but a bit awkward as you have no space to really see what is what.

As the clamp is sitting on the sided groove's of the bush you need to get the clamp loose enough to get bush out. If you still have bolt's attached this maybe still holding bush in place.

Remove bolts completley and then loosely on the other side. This will allow you to get the rack up in the air off subframe.

Then be patient wiggling out bush.

It is much easier with subframe removed but can be done in situ

Thanks Rob very useful picture, also I can see the 2 bolt holes at other end (by steering column loc'n), that strap looks a lot thicker than i thought deffo not a bendy one.

Thanks Mark, my patience like my back, was starting to fail so did the 2 top nuts and lower bolts up and went in.

I will have another attempt next week

No worries , as the bush has a split at the bottom you will need to pull it sideways and upwards to get it out, if that makes sense.
