I'm a bit of a nugget when it comes to this soooo, I just wanted some yay/nay answers, maybe with quick solutions? Thanks

• The barrel of the car has a mechanical side to it, that the key matches, like a Yale for a house door? So, any key won't fit any barrel?
  
• The key then sends its "programming" which I assume to be a four digit code, to the dashpod/ECU which de-immobilises the car allowing ignition.
  
• If the key if not programmed with the right code, it will start the car, but it will cut out after only 2 or 3 seconds as the immobiliser cuts in?
  
• The key/s once REprogrammed to give the car the four digit code it needs to de-immobilise and start, will STILL open the original car door locks by key alone? (note matching barrel, different "program")
  
• Finally, I think this has been confirmed already, but my remote central locking button will be unaffected by ANY key re-programming.
  

Right - all this would put my anxiety at rest, as it seems likely the "removal" stage of my conversion will be happening VERY shortly

There is a (4?) digit code that skoda supply to the dealers to allow them to code new keys to the car , but I'm pretty sure that the data that the chip in the key sends to the immobiliser is longer than 4 digits. This along with the physical bit of the key and barrel allows the car to be started

With just the physical key I doubt the immobiliser will even allow the car to start.

The "remote" bit of the key also needs to be coded to the car (or at least mine did when I got a new key - it came as two halves each of which needed to be programmed) and it's not a fixed code that it sends , but a rolling one that changes each time

I should say my RCL is a BigK aftermarket jobbie, with separate module and separate lock/unlock buttons on a separate fob. Just for info.

The key has a transponder chip in it, this can be programmed. There is no physical ident to the chip. Any key can be programmed to start any car as long as there is a mechanical key in the lock to activate the ignition.

So to sum up you can throw them keys you have with the donor engine in the bin, you dont need em. You can code your keys to the dash which will signal the immobilizer to start.

I seem to remember the sticker with the letters/numbers in the boot and the service handbook allow the dealer to recode it - but luckily I've not had to find out if my theory holds

IF I have the four digit code, is that what it uses, or is it another one of the magic numbers off the dashpod the key needs reprogramming to? having never used VAG com in any sense, I don't know the true ins & outs of its mechanics.

I don't really want to keep the flick key/barrel the car came with anyway - Its got the RCL bit integrated in it, that I don't require, plus its a little bulky too. Would rather keep my current TWO keys and have a spare, AS LONG as they both still open the two front doors, via the key/lock Would hate to lock myself out the car, if the RCL battery should pack up.

I never realised it went THAT way around. Thought they key had to be programmed by vag com, not vag com used to access and then the car codes the key itself. sorry.

God damn it, I'm gonna have to get this program working and learn it myself.

If the electronic chip in the handle of the key is damaged, the engine switches off by itself after 3 seconds. It is possidle to select an emergency code and in this way to deactivate the immobiliser.

The four digit code doesnt de activate the immoblizer, is an access code to recode the key. So then the immobilizer works as normal.

Now my curiosity is aroused - what 4 digit code? Does this apply to Mk 1 Octavias also?

Applys to all VAG vehilces with immobilizer 1 onwards, inc the octavia 1. The code has since been superceeded by a seven pin number which includes a date code so can only be used on the day supplied, but Skoda havent changed over to this system yet, but its on the way.

The four pin code can be obtained one of two ways, by your dealer emailing Skoda or it behind the scratch of panel on the long plastic tag supplied with your keys.
