122ps engine reliability

Featured Replies

I've read that the VAG TSi supercharged and turbocharged engine has questionable

reliability and oil consumption. Are all 1.4 engines both super and turbocharged? What about the 122ps? Is this engine suspect or is it just the 170ps?

Thanks, guys.

Anything 150PS and over is twincharged; 122 and 140PS are turbo only; some newer 140PS units are ACT though (only just started those - Polo BlueGT and Audi A1 - possibly A3).

Wrong. The early 1.4 that were mostly fitted to the golf were 140 and 170 and both super and turbo. Then in 2009 they released the 122 version which is turbo only

hope this clears things up a bit

My dad has a 57 plate 140 version and it's been utterly reliable.

150 ps said instead of 140,

thats all thats said wrong.

Many engines are reliable, if they all failed then that certainly would be a bad design.

There were and are faults there with Chain tensioners & another VAG denial problem.

**It might help if VAG gave Engines rather different Names or Codes and stopped the confusion with all the TSI, TFSI stuff,

with some very much differing engines & kW, PS, BHP etc.**

I'm getting a Yeti but my daughter wants either a Golf Estate or Octavia estate and I'm advising her on engine choice. She wants a car upto 3 years old, under 40,000 miles. If the 1.4 TSi engine is NOT the one with oil consumption and reliability problems, I'll suggest that 'cos she doesn't do the miles for diesel. Also doesn't want the DPF regeneration problems when doing short journeys.

She's warming to Octavia after several Polos as she now has two children and needs the space for camping holidays.

I had the 122 1.4ps engined Octy for 12 months. It only had a turbo, no supercharger (think this is limited to the furby vRS).

During the initial running in it used a bit, but after 1000 miles or so it settled down. By the time I traded it in 12 months later I still had the original 1L bottle of oil that came with the car in the boot, which from memory was still half full.

Again I think most of the oil consumption issues are related to the engine used in thr furby vRS and in general the normal 1.4s are fine

I've had my 1.4 TSI Yeti for just over one year now and have never had to top up the oil. Really pleased with the engine.

in some respects a rapid (new spec with decent discount) may be a better option if she needs the space for kids and camping, depending on what she thinks of the interior and styling as not to everyones cup of tea

(did I really just suggest a rapid ???, better go see a doctor :) )

I have had my Golf 118 TSI wagon (1.4 litre 118kW / 160ps twin-charger engine, ) from new since June 2010, 68,000km on the clock (~ 42,500 miles), and had no problems with it at all.
