egr blank with a hole in it

Featured Replies

ages ago, I got an egr blanking plate for my pd170, as I heared it improved economy. I then read you need to mess with coding etc and didn't bother. I have now read of people fitting them with holes drilled in them to just restrict the egr and not needing to mess with the ecu. I have read this is better for the car anyway than a fully blanked one.

so I ask, is it worth me putting a hole in it and fitting it? if so, what diameter hole? or is it best left in the drawer where it currently is?

I use the one from Seat which is an EGR gasket with a reduced hole. Works fine. I'd say economy has maybe dropped by 1 mpg at most.

You are right, if you blank it it will throw an engine management light. The hole in it reduces the gasses but it's just enough to prevent the EML from coming on.

The main benefit has been that it has totally cured the occasional stutter I used to get at motorway speeds coming on the throttle on an incline.

Thanks for that.

Is there a definitive answer as to whether blocking/restricting has any benefits. I have read it reduces MPG, i have read it increases MPG. i have read it benefits the car, i have read it knackers the car. There seems lots of conflicting stuff on the net.

Anyone done it and noticed anything, good or bad, on a pd?

What benefits could i expect if i did it. Also what diam is the hole? i have a plate and could just drill it myself

had it fitted on my previous TDI and the Mrs has one on hers, its not going to make miracles, but the car just seemed to run a little better with the mso I fitted them, also it reduces soot going into your intake, which should increase mpg/power too

Thanks for that.

I have removed the EGR completely and had it mapped out.

No noticeable difference in economy or power, but idle is smoother. Seems to run cleaner as well.

Only drawback is that the engine takes a little longer to warm up in the depths of winter.

takes longer to warm up after elephant mod. I guess it will take longer still. I thought diesels ran badly when cold, high wear poor economy. forgive my ignorance, but why loads of posts about cleaning out egr on the net when others are striving to block it?

it just seems there are so many conflicting views on egr restricting or blocking.

Only a little longer, like a few minutes.

I removed as they tend to fail or get clogged up and also I didn't want a load of oily soot going back through my engine!

If you don't have a problem that you suspect is the EGR then leave it alone if you want to. Engine runs cleaner without it, even at full throttle at night I see a lot less in terms of particles in the headlights of the car behind since it was removed.

ok, another question. if the egr is dirty/blocked (original is on 121000 miles now) and it was reducing percormance or economy, would blanking it with a hole return the performance and economy, or do you need a functioning egr, blocked or not. I have drilled my egr plate now with a 7mm hole, but read that 9mm is needed to stop the light. can anyone confirm this for a pd170?

If the EGR is full of crud clean it!

It will be offering a slight restriction, which in practice won't make much difference, but it is likely to stick open or closed and cause the EML to come on again.

ok, for reference for anyone else. I had a blanking plate and drilled a 10mm hole in it. 10mm because I heard smaller causes the dash light and also because 10mm was the biggest I had.

I am very sceptical about the benefits so was ready to remove it. went for a drive, can't say its any faster etc.

what I can say is that the gear change is much smoother. it used to slow a little between changes so you could feel the change when the clutch was lifted. now it is smooth as silk and there is no hesitation between gears.

no light yet and no adverse effects.

worth the three quid and 5 minutes.....

I also bought the seat reducing one for my cr170 no light on dash.

Not shore on the finished diameter of the hole thou.

OEM hole is 8mm
