What does a VRS have if you dont have the spare

Hi,

But of an odd question - cant see the answer by searching.

In a 57 plate Vrs, if you didnt order the spare wheel, what exactly would you get ?

Does it have a tyre inflator and glue?, jack, brace ???

Also - did it have an insert of some sort ?

If anyone has a photo of what the car had as standard, that would be fantastic.

Tin of gunk and a 12v compressor

You get the locking key to take the wheels off don't even think you get a wheel brace. Don't think you get a jack either

When I swopped mine for a petrol DSG part of the deal was I could keep my spare wheel from the car I was getting rid of

I'm guessing you should get what's standard now, foam insert in the wheel well, gunk, compressor, locking wheel nut adaptor and the plastic tweesers if you've got the plastic wheel nut covers. You probably wouldn't have had the brace and jack- I didn't the rationale fron skoda being you haven't got a spare so don't need the tools to remove it as (when it's new/under warrenty) you ring skoda assist.

I think this is something I cant sort that easily then - we are px'ing our vrs on saturday and ours does have the 16" steel spare plus tools. The new car comes with a spare, but I have a company Touran on 16"s that doesnt and I "borrow" the octavia's spare when we do long journeys and go overseas.

I would need to get the kit from a "non spare" octavia to put in place of the spare wheel and that isnt going to happen that quickly or cheaply in the next couple of days.

Oh well - worth a try.

I don't subscribe to the theory that a lot of the manufacturers are using of not supplying a spare wheel.

I know that they state that a puncture is rare, and the weight saved by not lugging an extra wheel/brace/jack around is better on economy, but I was dubious on every journey in my old BMW as that only had runflats. A tin of tyre gunk is no good if you have a blow-out or need to continue on a long journey.

Similar to Auric, part of the deal before I agreed to buy my vRS was that the dealer supplied a proper spare wheel etc.

Sorry if this is taking the thread slightly off-topic but: what kind of goo / sealant comes as standard with a new Octavia if you don't have a spare wheel?

I have a Mk3 ("NC") Mazda MX-5 with no spare wheel and according to the owners' club the Mazda sealant normally supplied is rubbish - the tyre cannot be re-used afterwards and the sealant costs £40-odd to replace. Standard recommendation is to buy a can of Holt's Tyre Sealant (£8 or so from Halfords) and carry that - works at least as well as the Mazda stuff and apparently a tyre temporarily repaired with the Holt's sealant can usually be cleaned and re-used if the tyre has not been badly damaged.

I can't imagine that whatever the standard "gunk" supplied will be much different to whatever Holts put in their tin. Tyre gunk usually (although not always) means that the tyre is not reusable and the tyre fitters will have a job cleaning the inside of the tyre.

So - what does a replacement can of official Skoda-branded sealant cost?

I have used the Holts stuff on an old hand-cart wheel (not ever going to be used on the road) and was amazed that (1) it achieved a very effective, more-or-less permanent repair on a very knackered old tyre and wheel (OK I would want something better on a car, obviously), and (2) the slight residue around the valve and on my hands cleaned off easily and completely.

Certainly on my Mazda I would use the Holt's sealant and I would not use the Mazda-supplied stuff.

I wonder if it's a liability thing :wonder:.

Using the jack can be so much more dangerous than using a can of goo, that the corporate lawyers might have insisted the makers delete the spare & jack in case they get sued when some one gets squashed by the manufacturer's supplied 'widow maker'.

But then I'm paranoid anyway!

I would doubt it. A modern, wide, alloy spare wheel and tyre is large, heavy and expensive. Given the relative rarity of punctures nowadays, you can see why there is a good case for manufacturers to try to dispense with it.

Statisically, I am told that there are more call-outs nowadays for running out of fuel and haviing a flat battery than for punctures. I wonder how many people who are reluctant to drive without carrying a spare wheel ever carry a can of fuel or a set of jump leads? And yet both of these items together would cost less, weigh less and take up less space than a spare wheel.

I always carry a set of jump leads, however I don't see how people can run out of fuel these days (Unless fuel gauge is broken)

OE VAG compressor and gunk is going on ebay for £25 so why not ask the dealer how much the kit is and keep your spare-a proper spare kit inc the foam wheel well insert is £130. Alternatively what's in the company vdub could you swap that over?
