White smoke?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Noticed recently after a good spin (normally a 30 mile trip) if i'm stopped in traffic with the engine ticking over I often see white smoke in the mirror. Roughly like the same amount you'd see when you start the car in the morning whileit heats up.

But last week I was in first gear and let the car roll down a small hill by itself, but then when i pushed down the go pedal there was a massive cloud of smoke left behind.. Now it wasn't blue, it looked more white than anything, and didn't smell like oil. More like unburnt petrol I think? not sure.

Really confused. Could it be boost pipes?

It's a 1.8t vRS. Cheers.

White smoke is water/coolant so it could just be condensation.

The other end of the scale is that if there is loads of it the head gasket could be suspect (you can get that tested before spending any real money)

The vrs does kick out a lot of water vapour, quite often clouds of it when it's cold outside when sat in traffic.

Any other running problems? Such as using more fuel or the water level going down?

All water levels etc are still the same as when I serviced it 2 months ago. It uses the regular amount of oil as any 1.8t's as I heard, around 3500 miles and nearly a litre topped up? 5w30 is what I used last time.

MPG wise, I always see 35mpg on the average, and on other days when I drive like miss daisy I see 40mpg!

Then it's the normal condensation/water vapour which most vrs's produce lol

I would suggest this when the temp was cold but its very mild at the moment..

Sounds like it is using some oil there.

I agree that it could be using oil.

In which case I'd suspect worn rings or turbo bearings. Start with engine compression testing to eliminate the rings.

Thats not using oil lol

Try a litre every 600 miles..... Thats using oil.

Manual states up 1 litre every 1k is acceptable, so 3500k to under a litre is nothing too worry about.

That sounds like the usual steam, mine was doing it yesterday after a long drive and then sat for half hour, on the restart it poured out for 5 mins and it was 11c outside, fine after a blowout on the bypass.

OK yours has real problems!

When you're used to 1l every 16kmiles...

i'm just gonna say it...

White Smoke indicates a successful Papal Election

Perhaps your Vrs is just a sympathetic Catholic?
