Fuel pump swap Mk1 Octavia

Featured Replies

This is an easy job but I couldn't find much online on how to do it, and I find seeing some pictures first makes it easier and less stressful to do yourself.

Lift up the back seat:

Unscrew the three screws for the cover.

Un-clip the power and fuel lines.
Fuel lines have a push-in clip at the back as you see them here. It pushes in then they just lift off. Petrol will leak out so have a rag handy to soak it up.

The pump is held in by the black ring on top, which unscrews anti-clockwise. I used a mallet and piece of wood to carefully tap it until it was loose enough to remove by hand.

Lift the pump out. Some wiggling is required and I had to spin it around to get the fuel gauge float to come out. Petrol will leak out, be ready.

Make sure the rubber seal is the right way around, slide the new pump in and rotate to the right way around. There's an arrow which should point towards the back of the car. It's obvious as the pipes won't reach properly if it's the wrong way.
Screw the plastic holder on, tighten, all done. Easy.

very good right up as usual rob! there is a special tool for removing that black ring but some wood and a hammer seem to work just as good :)

Sorry I had to :D at that.

It's a bit like saying, don't smoke when your doing this job ;)

I nearly disconnected the fuel rail with a tab hanging out of my gob the other day.

Yeah sometimes the brain doesn't function properly and we forget the simple things! Haha

lmao renegade!

did the same near the petrol tank i removed...doh!

good write up Rob as ever.

To remove that black ring I used a big set of stillson wrench that i opened up so the jaws fitted on either side in between the lugs and used the handle to undo the ring.

careful tapping with a hammer and a big flat blade, bit at a time on each lug (work your way round) will remove if you don't have stilsons big enough.

I used a piece of wood and brute strengh.

Raaaarrrggghh

yes even a bit of wood, just something big enough to spread the impact load, just lots of little taps rather than several heavy whacks is the way to do it.

no smoking tho....

I found this is the best tool to undo the plastic ring,an oil filter key locked with a screwdriver. You don;t have to hit it and you have the power of a rachet
