Mystery With Car Running

Featured Replies

OK this morning I went to the car and turned it on put foot on excelirator and it stalled. Dad did get it going later but its very sluggish to start with. Any ideas what it might be doing and what I can do about it. Thanks Its a Fabia 1.4 Multi point injection Y reg.

Is there an engine warning light?

Check for fault codes first.

Sounds possibly like the mass airflow sensor located on the air intake. Failing that possibly the coil pack or oxygen sensor.

Where in suffolk are you?

The problem just got a bit more interesting. She is starting but my engine light is on and my tempature guage has stopped working. North Suffolk tiny place called Horham

Ah yes know it well!

The engine management light has indicated you have a fault so you will need to get it read using VCDS, sadly there's nobody around suffolk (apart from miles away in Sudbury) with the kit but a garage should be able to read the fault code for you.

Should be more people who can advise come one the forum later for you!

You may know a certain Haynings in Framlingham well we are good friends with David who works there my brother worked there for a number of years so I will be having a word with him about it so should get sorted relitivly easily the main thing was to find out if it was a big problem but it sounds as if its probably is simple. Thanks for your reply

Probably quicker and cheaper to simply replace the temperature sensor since they are usually duff by ten years old, then reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery.

Disconnecting battery doesn't reset the ecu!

Once you fix the fault the engine light will go out itself after 10 engine starts of not seeing the fault (starting on drive wont work as you need to be in excess of 20mph)

The code will be logged though but no biggy

Yes it does, it forces the ECU to reload base settings and start from scratch. It doesn't clear the fault memory if that's what you mean, but the fault memory has no effect on the way the engine runs so you just ignore the CEL.

All sorted it was what we thought and in the process we found out genuine part £32 but non genuine £12 less. As for engine light once the fault had been checked it went out. Only one small problem sorted that problem and found out when at idle she is missing. Cars you find one problem and along comes another one.
