Servicing my car (little help please)

Featured Replies

So up to 100000 have all been seviced by main dealer and now I think its time to start doing my own services.

So its to begin with I am going yo stick castrol x (whatever its called) any objections or better oils?

Its obviously the 100000 mile service anything I should be looking out for or checking?

Cheers guys chris

Unless you can get the Castrol very cheap, get Quantum Platinum from your dealer or local TPS. Cheaper, and best oil for the PD engines :)

A self service changing oil, air filter, oil filter and fuel filter can be done for less than £60 if you shop around :)

I have trade cards for a few places so can get castrol pretty cheap but is it as good as quantum platinum?

Cheers softscoop

What he said.

20l of quantum plat 5w40 can be had for 60ish notes when tps hav a deal on.

Filters get for a few quid from ecp or cp4less?

Same with fuel filters. And air filters.

Get new sump plugs from tps cost less than 2 quid. I use them twice each without trouble on my fabia but I do 2 services a year.

Are there any preferences on air filters as in is it best to get one from main dealer or would a halfords standard pannel filter be exactly the same?

I have found the Bosch Air Filters the best for my cars, it certainly lets them rev more freely, previously I used Wix ones.

Cheers for all the help guys much appreciated

+1 on the Quantum Platinum oil.

Don't over tighten the new sump plug !

DB.

Quantum is VAG's own brand and is made by Castrol. Unless you can get Castrol cheaper use Quantum. Air filters are not going to allow you to rev more freely despite the above comment, it makes no difference to performance, just noise. I'd suggest a known brand filter such as opposed to a no name filter, same with the oil filter.

Get yourself a Haynes, a service isn't just oil and filter changes :)

Oil castrol or mobile oil vw 5.01 or vw 5.05 grade fully synthetic 5/30 oil or 10/30.

Oil filter Bosch or good make like.

Fuel filter Bosch or good make like.

Air filter any will do there all about as good as each other.

At 100k I'd say brake fulid change will be a good idea

Also coolant streath cheak if week replace.

Best place for price of parts apart from oil I would say is Euro car parts order on line and reserve useing a discount code if u can find one hope this helps

I yer can belt and water pump if at its age

Why do people change the sump nut?

The plug needs changing coz the washer and plug is all one now from tps and iirc its a pita to get the washer off.

if you can get to TPS, i paid for oil filter, sump nut and 5 litres of oil quantum platinum 5w40 all for £28.92 bargain. i change my sump nut as i have done with every service done on all my cars.
