Oil Change intervals, some reading.

Featured Replies

Probably not relevant for those in Warranty and having 'Fixed' or 'Variable' servicing,

but maybe some points in the article to interest some that do their own servicing.

Just shows you how much people are willing to pay for their percieved peace of mind and how cynical industry is ...

Thanks for posting.

Some of the big trucks have 100,000KM oil change intervals, I think it is Iveco.

I read somewhere that Lexus were testing an engine for wear, it had covered 100,000 miles on the same oil and filter from the date of manufacture, verdict was no excessive wear... to me means some wear was apparent.

In the real world we have the Yeti on variable and this is about 20k intervals. So modern oils do seem to be better.

Not only oils but manufacturing tolerances are measurably better than they were 10, 20 or 30 years ago..

There was a merc test where they done 1million miles with Mobile1, changing oil as required. They opened the engine up and it looked like new, literary. No I do on wear tolerances.

how long before extended oil change intervals are trumpeted as "green" due to less pollutants over the lifetime of the car

for instance, put all cars on variable servicing and halve the amount of oil used in servicing (ignoring a few mkII vrs oil guzzlers :) :) )

fewer filters in land fill, et etc,

but dealers to retain margin, due to marking up the oil price "a tad" and probably adding a line to the invoice for "disposing of the oil in an environmentally friendly manner" like they charge for rags etc

^^Cynical or what?:D

All ceramic engines do not need any lubricaton or cooling, wonder why they are not being mainstreamed...

I'm on the free 10k intervals despite my car being able to run to 18k , I'm going to send a litre off for testing before its changed though , it will be interesting to see how much fuel is in it , I'm guessing.....a lot

I am about to post my oil test results, will happen in an hour or so, it is interesting indeed!

We're waiting!.....

Can I move to gen car chat?
