it happened again - the other mirror

Featured Replies

Some time ago I spotted the offside door mirror coming adrift, and refixed it okay.

This afternoon, luckily before it fell off, I saw the nearside glass at a wonky angle.

Just refixed it the same way (Dev Con 5 minute epoxy) and I reckon it will be okay too.

But what a daft fault to allow through into the design. Someone at Skoda must realize that the black plastic film, whatever it is, just doesn't stay fixed to the back of the glass?

I have noticed that one of mine is bit in odd angle. is it easy to fix?

Both of mine have come off in the past year,

I just siliconed them back on!

Even the heating still works :-)

It's not just Skoda that have his issue - my old Vectra suffered the same problem and I believe there are other manufacturers that are similar. The "glue" that is used eventually fails. If you're lucky you can save the mirror (nearside caught by step-daughter), if you're unlucky the mirror falls off and smashes on the road (offside, while the wife was driving).

The impression I got with both mine is that the thin black film is stuck firmly to the back plate but not to the back surface of the mirror glass.

So in both cases I used this fast setting epoxy Dev Con (any similar would do) to glue the glass back in place, taking care to align it well.

The first time, I held the glass in place with sticky tape till the epoxy set, but this time I had a cunning plan. I ran a bead of Evostick (brown impact glue) around the back of the mirror, near the edge, and on the backing plate.

Then after 5 minutes (so the Evostick would be ready to work) I mixed the epoxy and put 8 small dobs, spaced out, on the back of the mirror, not too near the edge.

Then I aligned the glass and pressed it back into place. The Evostick works immediately to hold the glass in place while the much stronger epoxy sets (also only about 5 or 10 minutes). Neither mirror has shown any signs of loosening again. And the heating demist works fine.
