I was showing my daughter how the rev counter works when I was astonished to discover that the engine would only rev to 2600 rpm in neutral .Has anyone else found this? This also set me thinking how this might effect the MOT emissions test. Any one else any comments or knowledge re this?

Both my 1.6 CR TDi Fabia and 2.0 CR vRS Octavia DSG only rev to that level in neutral, so it must a software thing common to all

Isn't it a safety feature?

Stops the MOT testers causing damage on the emissions test.......or is that an old wife's tale ;-)

Its an old wives tale, for the MOT the diesel engine is rev'd to maximum (4.5K+) RPM for the smoke test.

To the OP, this is by design, the engine will only rev to around 2.6K RPM in neutral. For the manual box IIRC to get max RPM, select first gear and hold the clutch down whilst revving the engine.

In my Polo it only revs to that much when the engines cold and the ESP is on. If the engine is warm enough and I turn the ESP off then it lets me rev upto 4.5K.

Fabia vRS will also only rev to a much lower limit when in neutral/park

Its an emission regulation.

But it can be deactivated for MOT test. Either by switching ESP off or a combination of brake and accelerator as mentioned.

Mine used to have it too. When I mailed Skoda they replied that it is a safety measure to protect engine from being damaged. Fine I thought. Then the turbo shimming directive applied and there is no more rev limiter when in neutral. Why I asked again, for safety reasons they replied.

I had my monte carlo 1.6 TDI remapped a couple of weeks ago. I noticed now, that it revs past the 2500 mark in neutral.

The OP back in 2013 could rev above 2,500 as well, 2,600 rpm it says.

 

So how high can you rev with the remap,

and why would you want a diesel in neutral to rev, do you have Launch Control?

The remap will remove the limiter wont it.

So straight to the redline, if he so wanted.
