Reviews/Advice Needed . . .

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at potential cars to purchase as a present to myself when my final uni exam is done and am growing increasingly tempted by an Octavia.

I have read the buyers guide as well as a couple of progress threads which have been interesting.

I have a couple of questions though and would be very grateful for opinions and knowledge.

The two models I am interested in are the vRS and the 4x4 1.8T.

How different are the two? I am aware the vRS is a more powerful version of the 1.8 engine but is it just mapped differently or are other features restricting the power?

Does the 4x4 drive slow the car down? I believe it to be a 2 wheel drive system most of the time, is this correct?

How well do these engines last? Is 100k a lot? Obviously the way the car has been maintained will make a huge difference, but assuming average maintenance . . .

If anyone who has driven/owned both could help me decide which is more suitable it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The 4x4 has a 150 version of the 1.8t, it was really designed as a tow car rather than a performance version, hence the soft handling and large ground clearance. The vrs is in a different league for handling and power delivery

Thank you.

Am I wrong in assuming that their is a 2 wheel drive version of the 150 engine?

I think the 4x4 will have the AUM engine fitted which is identical to the AUQ(VRS) as you say above its just the ECU thats de tuned from factory. A stage one remap will still see over 200bhp. I also believe you can swap the haldex unit for a blue one which gives a better 4x4 front to rear ratio. As far as mileage theres a few on here done 150k plus. If looked after will do mega miles. If you prefer the VRS looks you can pick the bumpers up fairly easy. And sort the suspension out with some coilovers

I think a couple of people have tried to bring a 4x4 up to vrs levels but some have given up due to the cost, think there was a post a week or two ago.

As for the milage my vrs has done over 144k without any problems, seems the octy and 1.8t can last forever when looked after

Yes there is a 2wd version of the 1.8t think they are quite rare, dunno if it's just the l&k that had them
