superb combi 4x4 rear end bump

Featured Replies

Hi, just purchased a 13plate superb estate combi 170cr 4x4 and its fantastic, Just a quick question when i start the car up first thing in the morning and turn out of my drive on full lock i feel a rear end "bump feeling" as though the rear diff has just operated mommentarilly, once its done this it doesnt do it again during the day, Has anyone else felt this? Many thanks for anyones info Phil.

My first thought was that it might be related to the ABS automatic test procedure which is conducted when the car reaches about 20 km/hour. But having said that, I can't say I have ever heard the brief pumping noise associated with that procedure since owning my Octavia II 4X4 which, like your Superb, has Haldex 4. Perhaps the 'bump' is Haldex related? Whatever, I will be interested to know the cause once you have the answer.

Mine used to have a "feeling" when pulling away, at about 10mph, when casually changing into 2nd..

Are you on a slope of more than 5 degrees? If so it's probably the hill hold assist letting go. Mine can be a bit rough some times as I park on a significant slope.

The car is a manual, so i doubt that Hill Hold is fitted...

the Haldex 4x4 system is in 50x50 4wheel drive when pulling away - it always is - this feeling is, what i believed to be the power being removed from the front wheels.

Might be as simple as the hand brake slightly sticking on and the bump is it releasing, I get this occasionally when reversing of my drive when its been damp over night

I'm taking mine out later - I'll be on full alert :hi:

I've got it too, you fee It more than hear it. Our drive has a very gentle slope up to the road, you can feel the thump as I reach the end of the drive and apply a little left lock.

The transfer to the rear can also be felt when pulling out of a side street quickly, it feels like my last rwd car under these circumstances.

That is the same as mine, if i pull out of my drive with some lock on in 1st gear and gently speed up you feel this "bump" (cant hear it you just feel it), Ive spoke to a techy i know who used to work at vw and he said its normal to feel it under certain conditions, What he told me is the 4wd system sets of in 4wd and at aprox 10mph if no wheel spin is detected it releases the haldex coupling and goes into fwd and its this release you can sometimes feel. Phil.

Interesting. So does a Haldex-equipped car always set off in 4WD from rest?

I have driven lots of 4wd cars over the years and I can't recall any that didn't have some sort of driveline noise, backlash, wind-up or shunting at some point when driving, its kind of a 'feature'. They are better now than they have ever been but you can usually tell its a 4wd from the drivelines behaviour.

Hi I live in Norway, I have a superb 2012 model 170 4x4. I also have this feeling when I turn the wheel between 270 and 360 degrees, right or left at low speed .skoda service says that this is the way the car is designed and it can not be dealt With. too bad i have to drive the car in a specific way not to get this bump.

I don't know about you guys with the 4x4 drive train, but when I am parking, and doing maneuvers from lock to lock theres a slight snap/ click noise I have no idea what the noise is but I'm just wondering if it's a normal noise?

As for the bump I get this on mine too, it's the first 4x4 I've had so everything I feel and hear I am not sure if its normal or not!

The bump is perfectly normal. It always pulls away in 4wd and the bump is the Haldex releasing once it realises it's not needed. It's more noticeable if pulling away with steering lock on, say out of a side street.
