Coloured indicator bulbs

Featured Replies

On my MOT I was given a "secondary" piece of paper with an advisory suggesting that the indicator bulbs (rear) were a bit on the "white-ish" side.

I quick glance on powerbulbs shows I can pick up some silver/clear looking ones which appear orange when illuminated for £13-£15.

However on Amazon I get 10 orange coloured bulbs for about £3.00

I realise these are Osram/Philips vs some-crappy-make, but it does seem a big difference in price. My car isn't on the road to look sexy, it just needs to be practical and legal.

To be fair, I am not sure what is fitted in the car currently, as I have never had to change an indicator bulb (from or back) since I have owned the car.

The other bit of scribble on the paper said "numberplate lights a bit dim", but it looks like the inside of the lenses are really dirty, but obviously the screws are well and truly rusty, so I might not worry about that - they still give out a good light - I checked all the lights last night before dropping it off for its MOT.

Any thoughts?

I've got silver one just purely for looks, nowt wrong with orange ones and they're loads cheaper. Ironically I got a failure years ago for one of my silver ones flashing too orange  lol

On my previous car the orange coating on the bulbs started to flake off after a few years from new, giving a whitish light. At MOT time they replaced both rear indicator bulbs as they said it would have been a failure.

When these showed the same flaking after a couple of years I replaced them with cheap bulbs from Halfords or a similar car spares place for just a couple of pound. No more problem.

Unless you are going to keep the car for 5+ more years I would just buy the cheapest from a reputable place.

I might just go with cheap... for £3 I can hardly go wrong (even if I have to fit a new set of bulbs every year!). Not sure how much longer I'll keep the car. Initially I thought 250k miles but now I am thinking 330k miles, so I am only 110k away, assuming nothing expensive breaks on it! That is assuming I am allowed to think about replacing my ever faithful Octy workhorse....

I have seem the orange start to flake on lights on the now ex's Felicia (which is actually how I found Briskoda in the first place), as it had to have its bulbs replaced for an MOT 7 or 8 years ago as the light was too white.

I have ones from eBay at a few £ and they are dead on.

I have cheap silver bulbs of amazon in mine. Have had since sept and no probs. just passed mot on fri with them in aswell.

If the dim and rusty number plate lights bother you, you can buy them from Skoda for a few quid. They come as an assembly with the seal, two screws and washers attached. They only screw into the plastic boot handle anyway, so they're not going to get stuck.

I replaced mine a long time ago now and the screws haven't rusted this time. Perhaps Skoda moved to a higher quality screw after the 1st gen parts corroded so much......

I remember one of mine being mega dim due to a misaligned seal letting crud in.

I've had the Philips Silvervision indicator bulbs in mine for almost 6 years now. Never had a problem and they're lasting well!

The silver bulbs aren't prone to going white light the orange coated bulbs. However, they're usually not quite as visibly bright... not tried super expensive ones though, but I did pay nearly a tenner for a pair, and ended up moving them from the rear to the front as they were a bit dim in the taillights.

just buy some cheap orange ones you don't see silver ones in back light takes ages to shine white ish its just the amber paint flaking off

silver ones have a amber tint under the silver and are not as bright my mot bloke said they where on the dim side in the back so same again there in the front ones as i fitted led side lights in there as well orange was shine in from bulb

this and the "Too high focus on dipped hedlights" failed my NCT in January... just got 1.50e replacments and the headlights adjusted.
