Looking for a new car, volvo?

Featured Replies

I've a 02 plate TDI Octavia which is getting long in the tooth and in need of some work which I suspect will cost more than the car is worth.

There is a at least one wheel bearing gone, I think some suspension refresh to do, maybe wish bones, she's burning a little oil at start up/when cold and the gear box shift can be iffy into 3rd and 4th.

I'm looking around on eBay etc and there simply aren't many Octavias in the 4k or less bracket that are 04 or newer and reasonable mileage, complicated by the fact I'd prefer a Elegance or better again.

I have noticed that there seem to be a few more Volvos, particularly in areas close to my parents in the Buxton/Chesterfield area or myself in Aberdeen. What I don't know though is what they are like these days and what the cost of spares/repairs are like.

Anyone any experience, comments or suggestions?

Which model Volvo? Pretty much anything after 1998 is Ford underneath or a degree of ford input.

C30/S40/V50 from later 04 is Ford Focus underpinnings and the engines are shared too

1998-2006 S80 mostly Volvo.

2006 on S80 Ford bits etc.

2000-2010 S60 Volvo with Ford input.

Generally reliable, but a few electrical niggles.

Pre Euro 4 diesels are better

Nothing decided yet, was wondering if they were a sensible option or if I should steer clear. They used to be well made, lasted well, but spares/repairs/service were very expensive. Have seen some people commenting on the web that you can only get bits from Volvo which seemed unlikely.

What ever I get would be something comparable to an Octavia in size and quality. I've currently got an estate, but wouldn't rule out a saloon.
