I've let this go so far but it's now starting to bug me a little. The throttle response on my new 1.4 16V Elegance Combi is terrible. It's now 2 months old and done 1600 miles. I initially put it down to a tight engine and me keeping the revs low while running in.

Pulling away from an island or junction quickly is almost impossible. Pre plan the manuvure and allow about 2.5 3k revs and its ok but nipping out is out of the question. It feels like you're stuck going nowhere. I would go as far as to say it's not safe.

I had the car down to Bickertons in Sheffield ( where I purchased it ) a few weeks ago and they said thay had it on the diagnostic machines and everything looked fine.

I understand that the 16V needs to be reved to get the best out of it ( Bickertons also said this ) but surley it should have enough low down torque to pull away from an island OK.

At the moment it feels like my old 8v Combi would run rings around this one.

Any ideas ?

It is a 'feature' on the 14 16v sadly, the Ibiza 1.4 is exactly the same. 75bhp is the worst ou of the two but the 100bhp suffers the same. If your dealer has told you nothing is wrong there probably isnt. Sorry.

Mine does exactly the same thing - blipping the throttle before pulling seems to help, although I agree that it makes darting out a little harder!

I thought the reason was the ECU trying to 'smooth' the throttle due to emissions laws? Which is exactly what you don't want when trying to pull away

Only thing I can say is that you do get used to it eventually!

Yup; its to control the emissions; any new car review ;Parkers , Autocar etc all mention it. We test drove both the 1.4 16v and 1.9tdi recently and this was was one of the reasons we chose the diesel.

Happen to my 1.4 16v as well, I call it NA lag, you just have to get used to it mate.
