does a dpf delete take time to 'bed in' and should the tubo be louder now?

Featured Replies

had a dpf delete (innards removed)

should the turbo be louder? its seems to be a lot louder now, which I like but want to check it should be like that.

does it take time to bed in? day one, it seemed no different, but 300. miles and 48 hours later, I joined a dual carriage way going up a steep hill, put my foot down and the traction control went wild and I went up the hill far more rapidly than I was expecting. the torque seems to have increased gradually. just seems that after a few days, the car seemed to suddenly come together and is loving her new lungs. does that make sense? if so, why?

How do you mean the turbo is louder?

Is it whistling?

Sounds the same as it always has. Just I can hear it spooling up louder, doesn't sound bad or like an owl. Just louder than beforem thought maybe no blockage in pipes now that couldve soundproofed it slightly before?

Here is my guess, and that's all it is :giggle:

The DPF is a filter.

A filter restricts airflow.

Removing the DPF has improved the airflow through the turbo?

It's the increased airflow you can hear?

The increased airflow is allowing the turbo to perform stonger, hence the rapid acceleration up the slip-road?

The only hole in my theory is that I think the turbo is before the DPF in the exhaust system?

Have you had the car mapped so it knows the dpf is gone?

There is your answer, unless you had a stage 0 remap you now have about 40 more BHP than you had before. More boost = louder turbo.

even though I didn't have a remap, just the delete? I did read somewhere the pd loses about 15 horses from the dpf, but it just seems to have increased gradually, rather than the second I drove it from the garage. maybe I just imagined it and the extra go was there from the start, but I was sure it came a day or two after

chose not to remap, on 123000 miles and thought she may not last with the masses of extra torque

Extra turbo noise might be because its now more free flowing, also u have to realise ur exhaust note will be slightly louder too as when u gutt ur dpf it's like removing a cat from a petrol car(u get more rasp).

U will see a slight increase in power with a dpf removed. I'd be thinking more like 8-10bhp.

Yes, no hole in your theory though. Restriction anywhere in the system stops the turbo working as hard as it can. Removing a mostly blocked DPF should result in a noticable improvement.

But I also suspect the guys mapping out the DPF give it a bit more go too. This works the turbo harder.

When I took the 'cat' off my old Discovery (similar effect as a DPF), I noticed that it was more responsive and that the turbo was more vocal. This is entirely due to the removal of the restriction in the exhaust system and normal. I quite like to hear the turbo art work anyway.
