Speed bump; no fuel, no ignition

Featured Replies

Hi, my car is now dead...... It is a Felicia -97 with a 1.6L AEE engine with a Magneti-Marelli system.

The other day I ran over a speed bump at too high speed (spotted it too late, and....BUMP!). Drove the car another 100m and parked it, but when I tried to start it again: nothing. Checked the fuel line: no fuel from the pump . Also, I checked the spark plugs, and no spark. I immediately suspected that it was the ECU that was acting up in someway, and tried to check for any loose connections caused by the bump. Still nothing.

Then I saw that one of the injectors looked a bit odd. The connector "base" had actually snapped right off the injector (see picture), so no elctrical contact to this damaged injector. Is it possible that the ECU "feels" the broken injector and then shuts down fuel pump and ignition, and that is why I cannot start my car?

the ecu won't shut the electrics down if it senses a bit injector.

start with the basics, check all the battery connections and earth wires, also check that the impact shock hasn't made any of the relays come loose, it's unlikely to be the ecu that has gone wrong.

OK. Thanks, I'll check the wiring and relays as best I can, and report back.

Will a no-spark condition also shut down the fuel-pump (or vice-versa)??

yes the ignition coil is powered from the fuel pump relay.. Also the fuel pump relay is switched on by the ecu.

Do Felicias have an inertia switch to cut the fuel pump off in the event of an accident? Sometimes an enthusiastic speed bump crossing can be enough to set one off :D

 Very likely to be a fault within the distributor, very common problem with the 1.6 AEE engine.

Felicia has not that switch, only a gravitational flap that stops fuel coming out if the car is reversed from an accident.
