Speedo Problem......Help!

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Recently bought a 03 plate Octy 1 VRS and driving back from buying the car, noticed that the speedo is 10 mph out (reading too slow)

Is this a case of needing a whole new speedo cluster or is there another simpler way of repairing this?

So annoying as need to keep constantly reminding myself as i can get slightly carried away with the right foot!!

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Speedos are meant to over-read, not underread.

Is the always 10mph, or in a ratio of speed?

It is always 10mph under no matter what speed I am doing.

To explain as well, when the car is sitting, the needle drops below the 0 reading and its when I am doing 10mph, it then reads 0mph on the speedo :S

That almost sounds like the needle is out of calibration (if such a thing is possible). I wonder if someone has pulled the dash out at somepoint and b@llsed up putting it back together.

Unlikely to be the sensor in the gearbox at least.... (I think you can get the climate control to sell you your speed (in kmh) just to confirm).

Welcome to Briskoda :-)

What size wheels and tyres has it got?

mbames - thats what was going through my head in the first place! would it be something that the VAGCOM would be able to sort out??? maybe worth taking the speedo cluster out and double checking the connections at the back.......

Raf - standard wheels 205/50 R17's I have had the front tyres replaced about a month ago and the problem was the same before hand. It was weird to see the needle sitting as low as mentioned above.....

Think it needs to be recalibrated with vagcom. Either that or the needle needs pulled off and reseated .

Or add ten

Where does the needle sit when the ignition is off?

I am not sure if calibrating it would work, if it sits below zero. Mine sits bang on zero with the ignition turned off:

my needle would be sitting below the 0mph, the needle end would be where the bottom left corner of the mileage display is? (hope that makes sense)

Lofty79 - i have already tried to remove the needle and re-position it, it works for 10 seconds then automatically drops back down to where it was before :wall:
