Picking the hybrid up tomorrow...!

Featured Replies

Well after 2 1/2 weeks without the vRS, I'm picking it up from Ant at AP Automotive tomorrow. Had a PD150 Garrett GTB hybrid fitted and mapped, after my standard unit decided to completely self destruct and nearly take the engine with it along for the ride...

Ant has really looked after me with the car and been very helpful throughout - highly recommended!

Must say I'm feeling rather financially depleted now to say the least - everything's cost me an absolute fortune :-( Saying this, I will have a big smile on my face tomorrow that's for sure!!

Clutch/SMF conversion & FMIC will follow at some point along with another remap.

A what? A PD150 is a different turbo to any of the GTB series of turbos. :)

Well that's what I was told ha ha! I will get the full run-down tomorrow! I may have got mixed up (easily done these days!!), or maybe it's the excitement ;-) !

Turbo will be a garrett gt1749vb hybridised :)

I was wondering it it was a GTB1756 conversion, hence the question. :)

Isn't that a bit risky running that turbo without a FMIC??

Got the car back today! Not 100% sure on the turbo. Ant from AP basically got a brand new PD150 hybrid from Garrett themselves. I'm not fussed, because I asked him to spec it so that it would be able to safely run 230bhp'ish.

Oh good god it's brilliant!!! Pulls more like a petrol now! It took me a bit to get used to the change in power band, but once I was used to it I'm grinning like a Cheshire cat when it comes on boost :-D Plus the noise through the straight through Piper is unreal!

Sharpyy, I asked Ant to restrict the map so that it would be safe to run on standard clutch and SMIC. I was originally planning to get the clutch first, then FMIC, then turbo.... but the blown turbo forced my hand so to speak. It's completely safe - Ant has done a cracking job of the mapping, as it's very driveable and feels like it may have 'slightly' less torque than the Stage 01 map I had off him previously (he's a Shark dealer). He reckons it's running around 200bhp at the moment...

Sounds good Alex and you told me not to sell my bike ;) this thread isn't helping me.

Hope everything is sorted on it now! One day we will cross paths, our cars will look so alike!

Sounds like he knows what he's doing then mate, wish I had deep enough pockets to go hybrid!

If you have had the map restricted to suit your current set up, will you have to have it mapped again if tour det up changes. Ie clutch, fmic etc?

Can normally just be tweeked

With 200bhp you'll get one run and be heat soaked to the moon!

Or possibly stick it into limp mode! Needs a cooler asap

Cheers mate, it's running well again thank god. Ha ha DON'T sell it mate!! I will PM you back when I get chance! Track days on the bikes lad ;-) ! Red is the best colour remember mate ;-)

As above really, a tweak to the map will sort it :-)

To be honest Jase I've not noticed it lose power once for how I use it. It seems to be mapped really well - I trust Ant at AP completely to have not given me something that will end up in limp mode constantly. 200bhp is the best guesstimate from Ant, as it hasn't been RR'd. Cooler will follow, but not for a while. £2k for the turbo, exhaust and service parts has crippled me financially for the time being, so these will have to wait. I wish I could've just got that cooler and clutch done at the same time believe me!!

Seriously "£2k for the turbo, exhaust and service parts" and you're going to let your engine and oil get red hot?

+1 on this the smic isnt up to hybrid power. I was the same and constantly getting heatsoak and limp mode till i got a cooler.

I never realised how crap the smic is till i got a scangauge. My intake temp used to go up in 10s on WOT...

Yup!

I even felt when at remapped power the standard intercooler was rubbish!

I even managed to heak soak it that bad it went into limp mode with a measly 173bhp

I agree with you on the necessity of the cooler. I've genuinely not had any heat soak or any other issues though, and I've given it about as much stick as I ever would on the road already, and for a consistent period of time!!

A Seat Sport will be on its way as soon as funds have replenished slightly! The simple fact is that my turbo blew itself to pieces (literally), and I needed a replacement - so there was no point in going for a standard unit when I was planning on a hybrid anyway! Unfortunately cash does not grow on a tree in my back garden...

The biggest factor will be how its driven. If your not driving it hard you'll not get any issues. Just take it easy until its got the rest of the parts on

Like Jase I got heat soak on a clutch friendly shark re-map, so probably around 160 - 165ish ?

Just take it easy and you should be ok :)

You're all hooligans obviously ha ha!! ;)

We have worked closely with Mikko on the mapping of this car. We are well aware of the issues that can be encountered with Hybrid turbo's and incorrect supporting hardware.

This is why after various logging, testing, and map revisions we have found a comprise for a little extra power over stage 1 but not so much to cause any problems. All testing carried out showed no issues with the final revised map.

The map is specific to this car to work with current engine setup.

As Alex has already said, it's not ideal but due to financial circumstances you can only do what funds allow on a project like this.

We have made Alex aware of mods required to cooling, brakes, transmission and I'm sure when the time comes he will work his way through the required mods.

Ant

So will it cost extra to remap again?

If so i dont understand the logic!

A hybrid 150 turbo will work happily on stock mapping!

My old one ran like that for a while until mapping!

Id have replaced turbo

Then when funds permit fit all the extra hardware required, and then finally got the software to match

EGT's must be waay high when on full chat :o

The only cost would be for adjustments, not a new map.

The logic is quite obvious really. Blown turbo, replace with standard or replace with hybrid?? Alex was already thinking of hybrid anyway, so hybrid was fitted. I think that is quite logical!

As already said, plenty of testing carried out and all is as expected.

I seriously dont no how it all cost 2k for what has been done as none off the work is hard and the turbos can be had for £650 (as i payed this)

I'll pretty much mirror what Ant said above.... my turbo blew and I wanted a hybrid anyway in the near future. I won't be able to afford a cooler for a while, so what's the point in going back to a standard map?! I might as well enjoy what I can for the time being, and get the map tweaked later on. Perfectly logical!

To be fair I had other stuff done at the same time that needed doing, and also bought the rest of my Piper system, plus had to pay a surcharge on the turbo because mine was completely buggered, hence not suitable for a recondition by Garrett. The turbo itself was expensive, but no more so than the other hybrid turbos I've seen advertised to be honest.

For the record, I think Ant's done a cracking job of the car, and I'd trust him with my car any day, and would recommend him to anyone! Plus he's a smashing fella who fitted me in as soon as, and really looked after me. I won't go into specific details, but I've had a good deal on what's been done - the parts are ultimately the expensive part, which I more than expected. The end result is a car that is ready for the next stage of upgrades, and that I'm extremely pleased with until that time - I have a massive grin every time I drive it now!
