asv tolly low mpg on new engine

Featured Replies

finally got the tolly back on the road, but this engine seems to be down on economy by about 10mpg. ive checked the iq at idle and its 3.6mg/str and in 4th what its about 40-41mg/str, which seems high. at 2000rpm in 5th its about 11-12mg/str. is this about right? i have an egr delete plate fitted, but i left the software delete in, not sure if i should have. the timming is slghtly advanced. any ideas.

anyone?

What was included with the engine?

Injectors?

Pump?

It could be something as simple as a bad coolant temperature sensor.

the turbo, injectors, and pump. I used my temp sensor from my old engine, as it was a green one I bought not long ago. also I used g13 coolant and a new stat. vcds says im hitting about 90c.

im gonna use some diesel purge on it soon. otherwise I might try the injectors from my old engine. are they difficult to remove?

checked slightly advanced.

The IQs stored in your ECU will be for your injectors.

The injectors should be easy to replace but sometimes you do have to resort to a slide hammer. Just use a tiny amount of PlusGas around the injector and wait about an hour. You should try to pull them out without twisting them. Jiggle them a bit if you have to. You will need a new set of copper washers. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE 'FORKS' THAT HOLD THE INJECTORS IN PLACE.

If you do change the injection pump you will have to redo the timing even if the rig pin seems to match the hole.

so the ecu is matched to the injectors?

so the ecu is matched to the injectors?

Yes and no. Firstly, all ASVs are not the same. Ideally the ECU, IP and injectors should be considered as a set. Some things can be adjusted both mechanically and by ECU control.

e.g

IP injection rate at idle

early versions: 2.2-9mg/s

later versions: 3-9mg/s

IP injection rate at WOT should be 199-214mg/s. Your IQI seems OK, so I would do a WOT run.

already done it. the auto spell checker changed WOT to what. it was about 40-41mg. I read somewhere it should be about 36-38mg.

incidentally ive read that a lower iq means more fuel not less. this doesn't make sense.

You have a closed loop system, which is why you often see a wide range of IQs. In theory, I find that values of IQI close to 4mg/s give best performance even though the range is 3-9mg/s. Your 3.6mg/s will be fine.

Your WOT test seems about right. It should be done in 3rd. It does vary with loading (how skinny you are, how full your tank is, how flat the road is and how much junk you are carrying).

Why did you replace the engine?

Did you do a compression test on the new engine?

oh boy why did we replace the engine. in short turbo went, replaced turbo, mechanic even after prompting didn't clean intercooler, new turbo destroyed engine destroyed. get second hand engine, ip, and turbo. nope not done a compression test, though the engine does start at the drop of a hat, hot or cold.

im gonna run some diesel purge through the engine tonight.

The IQ isn't everything. If the injector spray pattern is poor, then you will get reduced performance. If the compression is poor, you will also get reduced performance. I'd swap over the injectors and compare MPGs. I'd also make sure I had the best set of glowplugs.

I'm glad I've got a petrol, I'm now totally confused on what's being said

diesel purged the tolly with about 500ml. still the same. might try the injectors from the old engine.
