Just pressed something on my fl climate panel and got a message saying "rear" with a padlock next to it. Suggesting rear controls locked?? Any idea what I did?!!!

Owners manual?

I've replaced my pre fl panel with an fl one so my own isn't too useful in that respect. I did look in a newer one on line but didn't read anything obvious. In any case, there are no rear controls as far as I am aware in a Mk2 Octavia. Am I wrong on the latter point??

Ah, so it's your own modification. Didn't realize that. Anyways, I have a 2012 Elegance with climatronic and no, there are no rear controls. Just the vent on the back of the armrest, with the mechanical knobs for aiming the airflow.

You can find the same climatronic panel in lots of different VAG products, including the Superb and various VW's like the Sharan. I can imagine that some of those might have rear climate controls. Maybe you somehow managed to activate a feature that really is supposed to be active on the Octavia version?

What happens if you hold auto?

Nothing as far as I can see. I know there are some diagnostic checks that can be run holding ac and max but I wasn't doing that! Anyway its all working fine so going to assume a glitch. Thanks again.
