B pillar gap- common problem

Featured Replies

Some may have noticed my post which contained a pic of a large gap on my front n/s b pillar

On closer inspection, the rear o/s pillar is similar.

Local dealer has been contacted and advises as follows:-

" Mr ( carrock) ,

( name deleted ) has sent your email onto myself in regards to the rear door moldings.

Because this is new model all concerns must be sent via DISS to Skoda.

I will be sending this along with you photo’s at some point to day.

I must though make you aware that I have inspected 4 vehicles on site & all are similar to yours. This information will also go down to Skoda with attached photo’s to see if any work can be carried out."

Interested to know whether anyone else has the same problem.....

So at least they recognise that there is an issue, but it will be resolution that Skoda offer which will really define them.

Have not seen the other thread, what issues does this cause (if any?)

I am not sure- my thoughts are it may cause a bit of excess wind noise but as both sides of my car are affected with gaps its difficult to tell

Will water gather in there/cause excess corrosion?

Looks a bit shoddy.

Probably, and Yes.

From your picture it looks like the rubber trim is too short and is fouling on the glass. What happens when you lower and raise the window?

That is the B pillar not the glass.

That is the B pillar not the glass.

So it is, sorry, the trim looks fractionally too small or more likely it's the person on the production line not using the correct technique to fit it which would explain why the drivers side is unaffected??

I'd want that sorted pronto!

Good luck with it.

Many thanks for highlighting this defect carrock, much appreciated. I will head straight to the B pillars when my car is eventually delivered and if the mouldings are as bad as yours I will refuse to accept delivery or sign any paperwork until the problem is rectified. That should set the cat amongst the pigeons!!

They have either not been correctly fitted or if the problem is widespread as suggested here then I suspect moulding profile is incorrect preventing it being properly located.

This is why im never really that keen to adopt a brand new model when buying a new car.

I had an 18 month old Golf MK5 company car and got the opportunity to rehome a 4 month old MK6 Golf GT when they were far from commonplace on UK roads and hadnt been around that long and it did have alot of silly build related problems that required warranty fixes; also found it had an unusual amount of rattles compared to my old car.

I was forced to swap it for exactly the same car towards the end of my lease albeit this car was at least a year newer and the build was so much better, no rattles, it drove better and even the stereo sounded better.

the initial buyers usually act as VAG QA guinea pigs; making all the build issues known so they can fix this on new builds.

That is always with case with any new product there may be initial teething troubles, you hope the vast majority have been ironed out prior to being released but some will always slip through. It is a trade off that you make between new technology against maturity. In regards to the MK1 Ovativia's , MK1 Fabia's and MK2 Octavia's, the earlier ones I owned were no worse reliability wise than the later ones, in fact my last vRS rattled a lot more than the first two.

UPDATE

email just now from dealer

Hello Mr ( Carrock) ,

Skoda have instructed us to attempt to remove & reposition all the mouldings causing issue & report back to them.

Please let me know what days we can have your Octavia.

Can't they try this on the other 4 they have in stock first to see if that works before pulling yours to pieces?

The dealer should have reported this via DISS (which is the only way to get it fixed under warranty). If there is a problem, the dealer should report the problem - not just say all the other cars are the same. It's either a problem or it isn't.

To be fair he did say it was going through the DISS procedure in my first post above

Did you edit your post or am I going blind and missed it :)

It's so important that the dealer reports the problem via DISS, so that VAG tech support can find an appropriate fix and if enough cars have the same problem, it may lead to a campaign (fixed at next service) or an uprated part or both.

A VW with sundry rattles, surely not!

Update- just received email from dealer to cancel tomorrows rework.

They had removed and refitted the defective trim on one vehicle which had no effect, so are waiting for technical to advise a solution via DISS.

6 cars affected at the dealership.....

I am currently in the process of technical reporting 6 vehicles with similar issue to yours(DISS report).

They asked us to try to remove/refit the mouldings on one of these vehicle-this in turn had no effect.

With that result i have been requested to report all vehicles with photo’s to Technical, whom will then forward all of these concerns on to the relevant factory for them to investigate and report back what action is to be taken.

Until this happens I have been instructed by Skoda Technical to take no further action on any vehicle with this concern.

With the above in mind i will CANCEL tomorrows booking as all the information you have already supplied(pictures) is suffice until an answer is forthcoming from the factory.

I have made customer care aware of this also.

Hi Carrock, can you advise how many mm the gap is on your car, not easy to tell by the pics you posted? I have just inspected mine at the dealer, pre delivery (nb. see pic on Chrome Trim thread!) and I could not see any major gap but I would say there was a slight gap, but hopefully nothing more than the expected tolerance. The demo car in the showroom also seemed to have slight gap too, similar to mine. I will inspect more closely on Sat!

Cheers,

M

Had a look at 2 cars at my dealer the other day, and it was no gap to see there. Can take some pic later this week if anybody want to?? :)

The gap is the thickness of the key- probably about 3mm.

Which is 2.5mm too much IMHO
