To Change Or Not To ( Oil )

Featured Replies

Have been a happy owner of my 130 PD Octy for 10 months now , and seen all the threads about Variable or fixed service for the Octy . My dill  ema, this is my first diesel all previous cars were petrol and i would do a regular oil change at 10k miles regardless of run time , have had the octy 10 months and done 14k miles , so a year will be 18k/19k . Do i take it in now just for an oil change , wait to 12 months then do it or let it run to the first variable notification . MY logic tells me change the oil , but keep to variable for everything else . Does this work . Or would i be better to run for 12 months and then keep to a 12 month regime . Suppose my nerves will not let me run to the true variable of some possible 20k/25k miles . With the same oil . Have used the 506.1 for top up and to date used about 1.2 litres most of which was in the first 10 k miles , it appears to have settled down now , and is useing less oil . Recomendations please .

Hi,

I've had my octy (81kW tdi) a year and half now. First oilchange I had in 3000km, it wasn't necessary, but I thoughted to get rid off possible metal residue.

My octy usess longlife oils and maintenance program. First time car informed about maintenance was in 38 000 km. Normal maintenance and oil changes. Between first oilchange and this maintenance I added about 1 litre of oil.

Next maintenance came in 77 000 km. Where they changed oils and all possible filters according program. Also gearbox oils where changed (this is in Finland 60 000km work, but was done with this maintenance).

I've had no problems with my octy. So I think you can also trust your cars indications and longlife program, or go to shop and have your maintenance program fixed to 15 000km. Then you can use "normal" oils.

If your octy is on variable, the PD service interval is upto 30,000 miles or 2 years. Dont worry about booking it in now, wait till the service warning comes up on the dash. The oil is designed with these extended periods in mind. If your PD is on fixed, then a different oil is used and the period is 10k or 12 months as normal.

The petrol engine is upto 20k miles or 2 years.
