baffled by setting average fuel comsumption (1)

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have only ever been able to set up average fuel consumption (1) more by accident than knowing how to.

I tried following the manual, pressing all the right buttons and the display clears to blank but then goes on madley cycling round various mpg's all the time.

As I said it has sometimes worked but not often.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you do a short journy the average mpg will be low and a long journy it will be fairly high.

The counter is there to disply a average calulated mpg not to set a average.

Sorry I was not being clear, I do not want to setup MY average consumption I just want to see what you mention - the on going average fuel consumption. There seems to be another average section (2) which kind of works but I don't seem to be able to get the 'running' average (1) which the car is doing.

Oh ok. I do apolagise. For that problem I cant help. Beyond my knoladge.

I think you may have your terminology mixed up or are expecting the wrong thing in the wring place...

The ongoing average fuel consumption is (2) unless you reset it or disconnect the battery.

(1) resets itself if the car is left alone for 2 hours or more or if you reset it or disconnect the battery.

If you want to display the current consumption (which will jump up and down every second) then press the toggle on the end of the stalk to scroll through the options until you get to 'current mpg'.

HTH.

Theres a button on the underside of the wiper stalk. Press and holding it will reset the average mpg counter to 0, give it a minute or two and it will display your current average mpg. If you just push it once it will display mpg(2) pushing it again will go back to mpg(1).

The madly cycling mpg figure, is almost like an instantaneous mpg figure.

Hopefully that answers your question?

Sorry to be a bit dim, so when the setting is (1) I reset to blank lines and then the disaplay comes back on and updates every second?

If I want my current average on a journey I will need to look at (2) which gives a n average (but dies not 'jump about' every second.

You know the toggle/scroll button on the end of the wiper stalk. Pushing down on that cycles through outside air temp, instantaneous mpg, average mpg, range, distance travelled, time travelled, average speed etc. (probably incorrect order)

When you get to average mpg there is two figures that can be display average mpg 1 and average mpg 2. So you could show your average mpg driving on a motorway and then when you hit town, push the button on the bottom of the wiper stalk so that it shows average mpg 2, push and hold that button again and it will display your average after a minute or so.

Might be best reading up on your owners manual.

The average 1 and 2 work over a time period not instant.

The figure given for 1 is what the car has recently done and will reset itself after 2 hours of the car not being driven.

The figure given for 2 is used for longer periods so fo example you can check what mpg you have averaged over a week.

Distance works in the same way.

If you happen to have multi function steering wheel you click the right scroll button to swap between modes 1 and 2; cars with the MFSW dont have the stalk control as all trip functions are controlled at the wheel. Would have thought it would be something similar for a pre FL car.

Instantaneous mpg (the one that jumps about a lot) is separate to (1) & (2).

Use the toggle switch to get to that one (it's next to the avg mpg (denoted by a circle with a line through it).

Most people use (1) to show the current journey average (as it resets itself) and (2) to show long term average (perhaps the current tankful if you reset it when you fill up or to give a much longer term average).

I've linked to the owners manual above, pages 18-20 cover this. Have a read as you never know what else you'll discover...

Also MPG(2) corresponds to the MPG over the Distance(2) which auto resets every 999 miles also

This will give a much longer average

Switching from 1 to 2 in the display is by the button on the bottom of the stalk
