Intermittent loss of power

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Following on from my introductory post, VCDS found a fault on the MAF sensor, so we changed that.

The problem is the fault is still occurring, but to a lesser extent. Clues would be very welcomed as the car is becoming something of a money pit.

Basically my Octavia (BKD series engine) randomly goes into limp mode and/or makes an occasional hesitation while driving. The turbo is relatively new (the old one blew 10,000 miles ago) so I' m not convinced it's sticky vane syndrome, and, as stated above we have changed the MAF sensor following diagnostics.

I don't think it's EGR related either as I thrashed the car repeatedly to 3500 revs before changing gear and got good healthy black soot/smoke from the exhaust as I changed gear. The soot has now stopped appearing so I am presuming the system is relatively clear. The only other symptom I have is that fuel economy is down from around 60mpg on a run to barely 50mpg. Advice as to what to do next would be gratefully received.

No solution -but barely 50mpg overall would describe my similar car's fuel consumption. Can only get 60mpg on my 'downhill' homeward commute. On a recent windy trip was down to 47mpg. Now approaching 60,000 miles.

Have you scanned with VCDS again since changing the MAF? If so what faults are stored?

Well that may be a new one for the forum on Turbo problems. VCDS showed up a turbo fault. Checked for sticky vanes but they were free running / clean as a whistle. We contacted the manufacturer (purchased from TB Turbo's.) and guess what? Apparently they have a gasket which can fail on the pipework. We took it off and found four holes in it. After fitting a new one, car was instantly better. I am now getting 64mpg without effort and the acceleration is akin to something I haven't seen for perhaps 18 months.

Will monitor the situation over the next couple of weeks for a final report. Thanks all for those who have offered advice.

Thanks for the update, glad its (hopefully) something simple!
