demonstrator advice

Featured Replies

Hi. 1st post though I've been browsing one here for a long time. After a bit of advice.

Been looking at a demonstrator my local dealer has. It's an SE 1.6tdi with golus wheels and bluetooth as the only options and non metallic. Love the car but not sure if I am getting the best deal I could. It's up for 18k, my px is worth 6k leaving cost to change of 12k. I was aiming for more like 10k based on new price of car on drive the deal/broadspeed being 17.3k with the same options. Am I being unrealistic or is the dealer trying it on saying he has no more room to move on the price? If that's really the case I may as well buy new on the Web. .... assuming they can really actually get the car.

Thoughts/comments gratefully received.

Cheers

Matt

Hi matt-k918 and welcome!

For a small fee (£5 I think) you can go to Glasses Guide on line and get a trade valuation for your px car. The new Octavia is probably too new to get a valuation for that though.

Ta for the reply. I am fairly confident the price for my car is fair. It is more the expected discount on what is essentially a used car although nearly new and a brand new model!

With demonstrators it tends to depend how far through its demonstration life it is as to the price the car is advertised.

The dealer will advertise the car as soon as they receive it, but they must retain it for three months so they price it high, this way it will look a bargain in three months when they drop the price to move it on. The key is to ask when you can have the car, if the answer is 1/2 months then expect to be able to bargain harder after that time. If he says car is ready now then it really depends how much he wants the sale, last day of the month today I would be inclined to say I would buy today at £16.5 (£10.5k to change) and see what he says, how much does he want the sale on this months figures! On the other hand if he has met target this month then continue negotiations next month and see how that goes.

Apparently i can have it straight away, but can't get back there now till Sat which is into June.

Just a thought matt-k918, but it might just be worth having a barter with your dealer on a new car. They have bigger margins to play with, may well have targets to reach and the "cost to change" figure between a new car and this demo one may be less than you think.

True but isn't it also a 3 month wait??? Really wanted estate but realised the hatch is big enough.

Might be some unsold cars "in the system" - could be worth asking.....

Not here to pass comment on the deal but I did have a look for a customer yesterday and there are a couple of SE 1.6's available (3 weeks), various colours etc, but may be worth having a word as Tim mentions?

Thanks for that Timoctav and Lee.

I have asked the question. ... not got an answer yet.

Lee if you wanted to send me a pm with your thoughts on the deal and/or a quote for a new one that's be great. Completely understand if you can't

Think you can tend to get a better deal on new cars to be honest. I nearly parted with 17k for a 2.0 CR DSG hatch, knocking on for a year old 8k miles with only a couple of bits of kit on it; admittedly via the VAT deal got a brand new Blackline DSG estate with considerably more equipment for 20k.

Depends how you fund the car but I tend to take 3/3.5 year PCP deals (Solutions) with a view to change at 18 months/2 years and buying the new car worked out cheaper due to the better finance rate and GFV of the car so was a no brainer.

Often I dont find ex-demos offer great value for money, certainly not Skodas anyway.

Well I went for the demonstrator in the end. Got to a deal I was pretty happy with with front mudflaps and boot liner thrown in as sweeteners. Thanks to all for their advice.
