weird fuel gauge issue

Featured Replies

right folk's bit of a strange on filled up my 37200 mile 54 plate 1.2 Classic last week,(nothing unusual in that i fill up every week),anyway the fuel gauge hasn't moved from full since, although it goes down to empty with ignition off,i have done 118.9 miles since, filled up again this afternoon car only took 6.31 litres and is brim full,in my rough estimation that mean's it has done 80ish mpg round town, very unlikely as previous best is 50ish mpg round town,so guy's any idea's what is going on here?,i am thinking stuck sender and maybe blocked breather?

your thoughts guy's n gal's

Did you by any chance have to drag the pump hose across the back of the car as there wasn't a pump free on the same side as the filler?

Filling up my missus's the other week I was in this situation and managed to accidentally hit the 'vent button' thing that allows you to put several more litres of fuel in than normal. I assume this happened 'cos the pump nozzle wasn't going in as straight as usual.

I'd imagine you did the same, and your subsequent 6.31 litres top-up only went up to the normal full level, so you've really used more than that.

that does make sense, but i always brim full mine ie fuel coming out of the filler neck so i presume that redender,s that theory irrelivent, yes i did fill from wrong side last week but have done this several time's before as well

No, I don't think it does. By operating the vent, deliberately or accidentally, you will be able to get more fuel in. Not advisable on petrol-engine Fabias, but the diesel guys do it a lot.

You can't fill the expansion tank without pushing the nozzle bit down even if you do brim it as normal I'd agree with wino in terms of that sounds like the most likely suspect did you notice when you filled it last week it cost more to fill than normal i usually get about £15 extra in if I use the expansion tank

sounds likely as it cost about £15 extra to normal, last week, that has somewhat put my mind at rest

Yeah if you look just inside the petrol cap there is a little black clip looking thing on the right hand side if you push that and hold it down it opens up the expansion tank when I fill mine I usually get around 100-150 miles before The gauge moves depending on driving style

thank you to both of you

I believe the actual idea of the expansion tank is to allow the fuel to breathe during hot weather as fuel does expand when warm

Yep, it's a sealed system (once the filler cap is done up) so there needs to be some expansion room or the tank or fuel pipes etc. could potentially rupture as the liquid heats up and expands.

If you look at a Fabia fuel tank, or a googled image of one; the filler neck doesn't go into the highest point of the tank. In fact it's on the side, maybe a bit over halfway up (hard to see accurately on lickle pictures). So when you're filling the tank, as soon as you get above the level of the top of this entry point, the filler pipe will start back-filling, and unless the air above the fuel level in the tank is vented out, its pressure will prevent the tank being filled all the way to the top. There's a couple of little pipes going from higher on the tank up towards the top of the filler pipe, which I guess are to do with the vent valve and the button that can accidentally (or deliberately) let you fill this top bit of the tank.

I don't understand why Skoda put this button there, it's not mentioned in the handbook as far as I can see, and as we have found, can lead to overfilling, which apparently can be problematic on the petrol models . :wonder:
