Smokey - Hot weather?????

Featured Replies

Over the last couple of days, I've noticed the vRS has been more smokey than usual.

Most of it is black sooty smoke, but sometimes it's blue smoke as well (especially @ low revs).

Is it due to the hot temps we've had lately or am I running into trouble?

Its just the hot weather...

hot air doesnt combust as well as cold air... fmic needed ;)

Hot temps. You can definitely notice it and it really sux. Cant afford to FMIC mine yet, keeping an eye on ColinGs stuff though as that system looks very promising :D

Mine is very smokey - esspecially with the A/C on !!

I'm in Germany at the moment where it has been over 30deg for the last week. I've noticed lower power & more smoke when I use mine at the track. After a session the back of the car is covered in soot. Hot air is lower in oxygen than cool air so not surprising incomplete combustion is taking place.

Steve

Mine has just ticked over 1600 miles and at all revs there is barely any visible smoke... especially compared to Ford and BMW diesels... I think im just lucky. Or will this change with more running in?

The more miles you put on the more noticable it becomes, but also the engine does free up and become more punchy after 10k miles.

Mine is approaching 20k and got less and less smokey :)

generally my only smokes if I try and go from too low down in the rev range. last weekend I called the fabia Joe, as in smokey Joe! I notice a few cars back away from me as they must have though I was gonna blow :D . The back was as dirty as well a dirty thing!

I'm hoping to have enough money saved for a FMIC but I'm not holding my breath!

FMIC would be nice, but simply can't afford one.........yet!

Hot air is lower in oxygen than cool air so not surprising incomplete combustion is taking place.

I don't think that's true - hot water holds less oxygen, as the oxygen is dissolved. In air, it's just a mixture so solubility doesn't come into it. What you WILL find, however, is that hot air is less dense (hot air rises, as everyone knows), and so there is less of everything - oxygen included - per unit volume.

Therefore, as the amount of air the the engine can induct is ultimately governed by the area of the intake vent behind the grille (Cupra intakes etc. will increase the amount that actually makes it into the engine however), then the volume of air sucked in as you drive along is an integral function of the area of the intake (and thus fixed also).

So, as the VOLUME of air inducted is limited by the size of the intake, but the DENSITY of the air is less when it's hot, then on a hot day, less air can get into the engine, and as a direct result of this, less oxygen... :orb_sleep

So maybe what Steve was saying was right, after all...

I'll just s*d off and get a life shall I !?! ;)
