Octavia 2, 2005, planed retrofit Columbus (RNS510). And radio trouble. Need advice!

Featured Replies

It wasn't so much I didn't recommend as couldn't find the revision A 402x firmware I am running. My link was broken. My Columbus is older than yours and I am running the revision A version of 402x happily enough. Having said that it doesn't add much over 381x in all honesty, unless you are like me and want the latest available regardless!!

Would this one work. If you are not sure, that's fine, I don't really see great benefit in upgrading as current firmware works fine and there are no new functions in the 402x as I'm aware of.

EDIT: forgot to paste the link, sorry about that. http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028

I don't think its revision A specific and it needs to be. The partitions in the filename (70:20:5) don't add to 100 which they did on the version I found previously, which was specifically altered for revision A units. Its also bigger in MB terms than the one I downloaded I think.

Hi guys! Time for an update!

HOWTO: Install GPS antenna on Columbus (RNS510) (for googling purposes)

So my GPS antenna finally came in the mail. If you are looking to buy one I suggest you go on ebay and search for Fakra GPS antenna, choose one that has fitting connector and you are set. That is if you are not going for the shark fin antenna.

This is what mine looks like.

Alright so here is what you are starting with.

Open the ashtray and pull on a corner of the plastic frame. Should pop right up so you just follow the edge and dislocate it from the console.

Now unscrew the TX20 screws and pull out your head unit. Disconnect the cables.

Alright next up are the airduct/shelf compartment unit. Stick a screw driver in between and apply some force. You should hear a click. This sucker will require moderate use of force, don't worry it's not going to break (I think).

Now that it's of put it away, make sure you don't stress the wire unnecessarily.

This is where I placed the antenna. It's magnetic so it attached it self to the beam, but I taped it just to make sure you never know when you will drive some rattly roads.

Now attach the cables to your Columbus unit. Test that the antenna works and you are getting GPS signal.

Reverse the steps and reassemble everything.

After that I install Maps and POI data from a dual layer dvd. Just put it in and head it in the unit for about 40 min, Columbus copied all the data in background. Navigation works excellent.

On my next update I will be mounting new speakers, the sound from the OEM speakers (especially the tweeters) is horrible, I feel like I will bleed from my ears if I turn up the volume. I prefer to enjoy my music bassy and loud so I will probably go for some pioneer speakers and some Vibroplast insulation (maybe Dynomat, dunno yet).

Suggestions for speakers, adopters or otherwise things that may make my life easier are welcome.

Nicely done and glad its sorted, and without the expense of the new gateway so you have cash for your speakers...

There are some very knowledgeable members in the ICE part of the forum you might want to pose your speaker question to.

Yeah, I'm really glad it was possible to cheat your way around the gateway. Thank you guys, you saved me a lot of trouble and money. I will see if I can hook up with some more gurus in the ICE part of the forum then.
