Bizarre behaviour electric windows

Featured Replies

just prior to purchase a few months ago my 2001 1.4mpi had a locking/window problem of some sort traced to corroded wiring but also had both "front door control units." I have VAG invoices for these parts as "MOTOR S6Q2959802AOOE" both at around £140+VAT. From a quick read I assume these are a combined control unit/motor. It also had a new switch (not sure which side) at £32+VAT Part No 002945415D.

The passenger window (from drivers side operation) has sometimes behaved slightly unusually in that it's gone up instead of down with switch and minor foibles like that, but drivers side has been fine until yesterday when it did appear to not want to operate until a few tries. However, today operation was a complete mix up from the switch with the L/H window switch operating the R/H window!! Sorted itself out half an hour later.

I doubt a wiring issue but definitely an electrical control one. I read about the dual switch in the drivers door becoming faulty. Is it likely to be that, surely not one of the new control units...?

Anyone experienced this or any knowledge on it?

Thanks

Having taken my passenger door apart recently I can tell you the motor itself appears to be the control unit, the switches for the windows aren't particularly bulky so I'm pretty sure they are just switches. I would guess you've go a faulty drivers side switch, which if I'm right isn't too hard to sort out :)

Yes, hoping that's the case. However, I've discovered invoices for 3x switches, two which are a similar price. Just going to see if I can X reference them to see exactly what was bought.

Looks like a new passenger one was fitted but not drivers so guess that's probably the culprit...

Would still be pleased to hear if anyone has experienced this erratic behaviour of windows and it was their switch at fault

Thanks

Had to replace the drivers side double switch in mine, apparently this is a very common fault as the car gets older, since you've had just about everything else replaced you should probably just go ahead and replace it.

Mine does exactly the same. The drivers side sometimes takes a few presses to go down, it stutters on the way down, then other times it is fine n goes all the way down on one press.

Passenger side does the down instead of up, only seems to have happened after the i got it fixed when the window dropped n wouldn't go up. It does it for both switches (drivers and passengers), would it need both replacing or is it part of the motor?

I have the same probs with mine

Mine used to do that too, the right/ left swtches would randomly swap sometimes. It stopped doing it after a while though.

Mine has settled down again to drivers working ok and passengers sometimes stuttering and sometimes briefly going opposite direction from that asked

I probably should just go ahead and buy a new drivers side (dual) switch. As said above everything else has been changed on my car so presumably it must be this switch at fault. The switches are reasonably inexpensive at about £20 for single passenger one and drivers one probably just under £30 Inc VAT
