stumped with towbar electrics. Think my cars had a stroke

Featured Replies

So

Had my towbar installed and had a full system specific loom fitted to my octy vrs

I came to tow with it about a month back and noticed that the light fault error was illuminated on the dash and gives the following errors:

1) Check Brake light

2) Check left hand indicator

3) Check left hang light

I thought it was the trailer, as you do. I ordered a brand new set of wiring (well two actaully as one was two short) Ive tried both the new sets and they all come up with the same error

so either i have 3 sets of lighting where the left hand lights arent working, or theres a problem with the electrics somewhere.

has anyone seen this type of error before?

who fitted the kit?

what kit is it?

I assume that you checked both the car and trailer lights and all worked?

Get the fitter to check it.

I had it fitted at Barnsley towbar centre on recommendation from here. It's a full witter detachable with towbar with the additional car specific loom

I've booked it back in for them to take a look. It must be the car as someone else towed my trailer and all the lights worked fine.

Let me know how you get on.

I've always had great service from BTC on our 2 cars. They fixed tow electrics and exhaust mounting problems caused by poor bodyshop work from DMK Skoda Leeds on my Octy.

I've emailed BTC asking them to sort you out.

I thought it was only the trailer indicators that were monitored by the car. If you are having those warnings then the car thinks there is something wrong with the car lights. An unanticipated current draw or not as the case may be. I would get them to check it out. specifically all the connection to make sure then isn't a bad one giving a high resistance reading which the car is interpreting as a fault.

Is the kit a can based kit?

I emailed BTC for you kris1

my initial feeling is that the microswitch in the tow socket has either failed or is sticking

They think that you are booked in so let us know how you get on.

Sounds possibly like one of the CAN connections hasn't been made properly. Either that or sometimes a fuse controls one side of the towbar electrics. Hope this helps

Kris did this get sorted and what was the problem?
