Hopping Outwards

Featured Replies

I took a long tight corner the other day and I was on the limit of grip. The car started hopping outward of the corner. What does that say about the suspension?

The car has custom coilovers and powerflex all around.

Too low and would benefit a rarb

To stiff if its hopping, my old Corsa used to do it on cheap coilovers because they were rock hard

if the corner was rough and bumpy it can happen on standard suspension

Too fast.....

usually the tyre sidewall is giving making the tyre jump, as a result of too much lean and the suspension going solid on the bumpstops etc

Not too low surely? I got my 330 to do it when as standard on a German slip road (wound the speed up slowly to see given it seemed like a 720 degree turn). I'd have thought it would be down to poor road surface or hitting the bumpstops/max travel?

Could be any of the above or old hard tyres or bumpy road surfaces/even slightly gravelly.

Thanks guys for answering. I really appreciate your help.

The tires are all new, the road was smooth and there was no gravel or anything else. Felicia V16 said something interesting. The sidewalls of the tires I have are really weak. Moreover, I am still running the 14" wheels which means there is a lot of tire there.

tommccabevRS is right about the coilovers being stiff too. They are stiff for the street, but not autoXing I believe. However, how would coilovers make the car behave on a corner like that although the surface is smooth?

If the road was absolutely smooth, the coilovers wouldn't be too stiff. Only on bumpy roads are coilovers too stiff and you can feel it stotting around and you cant corner fast at all.

I'd say you were definitely on the limit of the tyre. What tyres are you running?

Also, it could be too low. What is it like on the back compared to the front? If the back is too low/lower than the front, it'll be pushing the front end to understeer whenever you're pushing hard

The car is running eco-tires; 400 tread ware. Eventually I am going to get Falken RT615K.

The car is much higher that most of the cars on the forums and the front is a bit lower than the back. I would like to mention here that the car isn't understeering; the whole car is hopping away from the corner. On top of all of that, the car is really tail happy. YES! It is tail happy. Stick it to a corner above the tires capabilities and it would brake the rear lose. I don't have any understeer except in very slow corners or in stupid correction within cornering.

Sounds like new tyres are needed mate, then take it from there :)

Let me convene this pushrod to make more power and the tires would be just the next thing I would give my attention to :)
