I have a Octavia Diesel estate DSG. I love the car but at low speeds the gearbox is not very smooth, is this normal?

I'm not sure that proves anything either way. My dad used to insist that his automatics were "dead smooth", but I could always feel every upshift they made when driving gently.

My point was that one person's "dead smooth" can be another's "unacceptably jerky", even when it's the same (literally) car and driver combination.

Or watch the tacho perhaps? Maybe feel the change in acceleration and engine torque?

Not in my experience. Mine is as smooth as a baby's bum.
