Octavia II, 2005 w/ Columbus. Need speaker recommendation! ++

Featured Replies

As the title suggests, I drive an Octavia II, 2005 with a retrofitted Colombus unit. The HU is great, however the OEM speakers are horrible (especially the tweeters). Every time I turn up the volume a little I feel like my ears will bleed, so I will be replacing.

Now I'm open to suggestions on the extent of the upgrade. I originally was planing to replace speakers (all of them) and ad some Vibroplast (Dynomat) in the doors, but if it is possible to add a sub as well with some DSP I would be so happy!

Speakers I have been considering are:

- Pioneer TS-A172Ci

- JBL GT6-6C

- Focal 165A1

One thing to know, I enjoy my sound bassy, so any speakers with some extra weight on the base would be awesome!

What about the spacers, I seen someone suggest SAK3108, could anyone confirm it?

I hear that clips holding the doors are "use-once-only" could someone link to ebay or something for replacements?

I'm really hoping a plug and play solutions here, but I will be more than willing to tinker to get the sound I'm after. Please do share your solutions and setups, pictures would also be nice!

Thanks guys!

This will allow you to replace the front 6.5"'s with 6.5"'s and the rear 5.25"'s with 6.5"'s. This may not be the same for the estate version. They also have adapters so you can use the cars existing wiring (plug and play) which means there is no chopping up the cars wiring if you don't want to run new wiring.

Can't rate the speakers you mention, I used Infinity KAPPA 60.11cs - 16.5cm 270W components all round and I think they sound very good. The tweeters are especially good. I think the Mids are quite bassy as well but I don't really have anything to compare them to. Mine are running from a dedicated AMP though so they may sound rubbish off the headunit. If you look in the thread above, I ran the stock speakers from the AMP for about 2 weeks and they sounded better as well.

I would look at sound deadening the doors if possible if you are going for a bassy setup.

With regards to the clips, I took all 4 door cards off and didn't break a single one. I did invest about £35 in a set of Bo Jo's. They made working on the car soo much easier and they are designed to be less damaging to car trim than screwdrivers etc.

There are cheaper options that will proabaly do the job as well.

Thanks Nemtex!

I will definitely look into Infinity KAPPA speakers :) Just out of curiosity, how did you connect your app to your HU (perhaps you are runing an aftermarket one?). Bojos do look like neat tools to own, I will probably invest in a set, thanks!

I personaly dont like the sound of infinitys, too harsh for me.

Id suggest looking into hertz

Also look at fitting a wave diffuser behind each speaker aswell as deadening

I'm using the Columbus with a Line driver that converts normal speaker outs into RCA signals that AMPs can use. I believe some AMP's have this facility built in. I think it's known as high level inputs to low level output (or something like that). I think ryan-re's your man for the more technical description.

@ryan-re

Wave diffuser, would you use on the whole door or just the immediate area behind the speaker itself?

Just behind the speaker mate
