Octavia III extra warranty but worried sick about DSG7

Featured Replies

Hi

I think Octavia offers a lot for the money but I'm worried sick about all the dsg7 problems. Skoda offers to buy an extended warranty though, which means my car could be covered for 5 years.

Danish organization of Motorists are watching the DSG7 DQ200 as a lot of problems have occurred with it. Will the 1.4 TSI have the DQ200? There has also been a lot of problems with the TSI 1.4s, however, from what I read (from VW) it is fixed on ther new models. I will keep my car for 6 years minimum and am very dependent of it as it is a car for a disabled driver.

It's either thst or the new Honda Civic 1.8 AT. Honda builds the most reliable engines.

yes correct 7speed AT gearbox is really sick. In India many skoda cars equipped with 7dsg got breakdown and also they suffered with many gearbox problems and also failure of mechatronics. the 7speed dsg in not automatic but its a big PROBLEMATIC.

i will suggest you to go for manual transmission or if they have fixed the problems of 7 dsg then surely go for it but with extra warranty. its a real boon.

I need the automatic so I cannot take a manual. I cannot find out if they have fixed the newer DSGs but I don't think so.

If you go for the 2.0TDI DSG it is the 6 speed version, the 7 speed version only for the 1.6TDI DSG. DSG not currently available in UK with 1.4 TSI.

I have currently DSG7 in my Octavia 2 with 1.4 TSI. No problems at all with gearbox and engine. Now my car have over 50000 miles on clock. I'm very happy user.

My new O3 is on the way ATM also with DSG7 :-)

I think it would be safe to assume that all new models would have the benefit of the 'fix' that is applied to all recalled cars.

There is no "fix" to the problem gearboxes apart from them not being made correctly (they also were made in a Chinese plant). Given VAG's global presence, its likely that these "problem" gearboxes were largely destined for Eastern (Asia/India) manufacturing facilities rather than European or US plants (although not impossible/improbable).

Over half a million boxes are being recalled in china and other parts of Asia, and now VAG, after a lot of pressure, have had to admit to a problem in Australia, the differnce being here is that the boxes are made in Germany alongside those for the UK. Friends of mine in the USA say that VWs reputation there is not good and that VAG have had to give a ten year warranty on the DSG box. Sounds like a good reason to buy a DSG car only if under a good waranty.

"DSG 7 (with internal designation DQ200) is the box in which a large number of customers had problems with the Volkswagen cars and which also led to service the 384,000 cars in China and 91,000 cars in Japan. Now it sits in the brand new Skoda Octavia. We wonder why Skoda Sweden?

Have DSG7 (DQ200) has improved since the problems came to light?

- We have implemented software updates, and also introduced a new generation of mechatronic unit in DQ200-box, so it should work better.

What was the technical reason for the problems?

- In isolated cases caused an electrical failure in the control or loss of oil pressure in the gearbox mechatronics unit to power interruptions. High ambient temperatures, high humidity, in combination with dense traffic (very start and stop) created the problems. The updates should now have improved this."

If you are that worried then my advice to you would be don't buy an Octavia. Maybe you would be more at ease buying a Honda or for even better reliability, a Toyota. No point buying a particular car if you are going to worry about reliability even if it may be unfounded.

I'm happy to be corrected - just goes to show I shouldn't believe everything I read on forums!

You are not being corrected. I quoted a statement in a magazine in Sweden called "Teknikens Värld"

The guy could be right, or wrong.

As he is the Head of Communications to the media then one would hope he is right! If not, then it's a(nother) lie and VAG get all that is due to them..

there are so many failures of dsg in skoda cars in India both in 7 and 6 speed gearbox you can check them in our indian car forum such as team bhp you will see dozens of problems. Also after so many problems they are not accepting and they had also not recalled a single car.

here is a link of skoda Octavia 2 sold as laura in India 6speed dsg failure and other issues please check.

Head of VAG/Skoda PR could be right. Yeh lets all have a good laugh.

I travel to China frequently and Shanghai has all the conditions required to kill the DSG box. The papers over there were full of state propaganda that the government were forcing VW to recall all DSG equipped cars and correct the fault which at the time VW did not admit there was any problem.

Good to see they've hopefully found a fix and that it doesn't affect the 6 speed versions in blightly!

So, what do you think. Octavia looks like a killer package and with 5 years of warranty? Seller said, in Denmark there has been 300 reported problems with DSGs (many fixed under warranty) od of the total amount of DSGs in Denmark.

And what about the 1.4 TSI 140 engine- I worry about its reliability as well.

The 1.4 TSI in the Octavia is a new engine AFAIK so there is no body of evidence regarding it's reliability so why should you worry about it???

Stokey: how many miles have you covered? Any problems?

Stokey: how many miles have you covered? Any problems?

Only done 1500 miles and so far I've nothing but praise for it, every quiet, smooth and pulls strongly from 1500rpm. Oh and the fuel economy for such a tight engine is pretty good too!

Well, It's a great package for sure, and with af 5 year warranty... Much easier to enter than a Honda Civic too (important as I have got back problems and suffer from cerebral palsy (bad walking).

I tend to favor the Octavia now. Prefer Hatch look though, however, with a toddler, combo is probably the way to go.

I have just ordered a dsg equipped car. From all the reading I have been doing, it seems like all the reported dsg problems were from around 2011 and before. DSG seems pretty stable after that. I am buying my new car (VW polo gt tsi in india) based on this assumption. Anyone around here who faced any issues in 2012 and alter models?

Will it be DSG7?

DSG7 is used on all cars with under 250NM couple.

  • Author

I know, but I don't know the torque limit of the Polo GT, hence, the question.
