Octavia noisy front suspension

Featured Replies

Hi,

Iv e had a slight knocking noise over bumps on my 2000 Octavia 1.9tdi front suspension since I bought it in Aug last yr, Also a wheel bearing type of droning sound (same side ).

Checked the MOT advisories (it had new mot) and they said nearside inner steering rack joint has slight play, also OS and NS Anti Roll bar has slight play in pin/ bush. Well the noise got progressively worse in last few weeks, so took it to my local garage, they found, a huge amount of play when ns wheel off the ground (left to right and a little up and down). We fitted a new tie rod, and for good measure a rod end. The tie rod that came out was literally falling out of the ball joint !

Anyway, much much better but still the knock knock over bumps? Will having the anti roll bar bushes fix this, or would it be the wheel bearing? My friend has a Passat and his makes the same droning noise is it normal ? or is it a separate issue from the knocking noise, or should I do drop links??

Also for anyone who has orange fluid leaking from the steering rack boot as I did when we did the job,,,,,,, don't panic and get quotes for a new rack as I did, it was full of rusty water! alot of deep puddles over here !

Thanks Rik.

The knocking noise over bumps is usually roll bar bushes, if you look at them in situ, sometimes you can see that they're worn. Measure the roll bar diameter as it will make it easier when getting new ones and also get new clamps.

Is that a mark 2 Granada Ghia in your profile picture?

Or the bushes in the wishbones. When I changed those it eliminated the knocks I got from going over speed humps and breaking/turning left for roundabouts.

Just replacing all my front end as had knocking for a while and car on original suspension from new.replaced both drop links,up rated arb bushes, dog bone bush and got new top mount bearings and uprated top mounts to go on.cost under £100 for everything and sweet as a but now.the main ones on these are arb bushes, drop links and top mounts.
