Steering issues

Featured Replies

Anyone know of any issues I picked up my new fabia vrs from the dealers before going on hols that night and it was pulling to the left. I was told the track rod wasn't set properly and the wheels needed realigning and the problem would be fixed. I have been told the pulling in the steering is still there and the dealers have contacted Skoda uk for advice. I am gutted a brand new Skoda came with this issue.

Welcome to the forum.

??

Is it or was it 'Steering to the left when you try to go straight', even on a flat road without much camber?

ie Going into the kerb.

Was it 'Pulling to the left when braking'?

If the mechanicals/steering/geometary are OK now, and they have properly done the Alignment Check

Get them to check how the tyres are on.

'Tyre Runout Stripes'.

(& to check the pressures, if tyres are directional etc etc,

but that should already have been done and be fine.)

Personally i never understand what sort of advice Trained Technicians expect to receive from the Manufacturers.

The car is built correctly or not,

they know what to check or they should not be working on peoples cars.

If they are still stumped at the Dealership,

maybe ask them if they know where they can find a good Professional Mechanic that can check the cars alignment and tyres.

lots of Monte's pulling to the left. In fact mine was when I picked it up, they rotated the tyres around and this sort of cured it. My Vrs pulls to the left as well, a combination of low profile tyres and camber of the roads. I will put up with it until my first service and I will see what the dealership can do. Does seem to be a common problem though. A quick search on here will reveal plenty of posts.

Our Fabia VRS pulls to the left also, I find holding the steering straight stops this happening. On a serious note I think it has something to do with road camber, if you drive on the opposite side of the road (when it is safe to do so) you will notice the steering will pull to the right.

Many cars drive as they should and hold a line even on cambered UK roads.

Incuding Montes & vRS.

The ones that pull or run off are the wrongly set up ones, not the ones that deal with roads as they should.

Some vehicles come with 'Handed Springs' and suspension to suit the Countries they will be sold in.

This does not mean that when you take them abroad that they will drive badly though.

There are some that you notice a lean on when on the flat, (Like a Suzuki Gangta Lean.

But thats kind of unusual.

the cambre of the road is set so its higher in the centre, therefore water runs off to the sides of the road, if your car is set up properly, it will always wander to the left on most roads without input. its simply following the cambre.... if you founs a sweeping motorway bend cambered to the right, it would pull right....

unless its a strong pull i wouldnt worry..... to get it to go straight on most "normal" roads would be setting it up incorrectly...

Finger tip steering input to keep the car going straight even on single carriageway heavily cambered UK road,

and not much need to hold the car from going into a kerb would be about right.

From low speeds to national speed limits and above.

It should not be a lottery when purchasing a Skoda if it is a verging to the verge car or not.

There must be something up with the OPs car or why would the Dealer be pulling the 'Getting advice from Skoda line',

& the 'Track Rod was not set properly' bit.

George, thanks for the response and to everyone thanks for commenting and yes I know to stop it pulling to the left hold the steering wheel. The small time I drove the car before going on holiday it was tried on all road surfaces and cambered roads and flat car parks. It was alot like torque steer but I have found no comment or review about violent torque steer with the vrs. The tacking arm not set properly and time of collection worried me but I have been told that's sorted. When I get back from holiday and drive the car again I can see for my self what it is like.

There can be Torque steer with a vRS and it can be violent or more violent depending on tyres and tyre pressures.

I hold the steering wheel tight if booting it hard from around 50 mph, and more so on certain roads.

Thats not a steering issue/fault though, and tyres, pressures and road surfaces all effect,

and some cars are more prone than others.

Once the car is all correct and as should be,

there can have the setting re-set to Less Assistance on the steering if you wanted.

(there is also 'a 'Disability setting' with more assistance.)

Hi all, this is my first post.

I've had a vrs for 2 months and 2700 miles. It never pulled left but wandered all over the road depending on the camber especially on heavy throttle. I took it to a local place that has a hunter laser tracker machine and know how to use it and after a tiny adjustment it drives like a different car. I also had an Ibiza cupra and found this ye same problem with the factory set up.

My Monte torque steers like my old Mk II Golf GTi, which is fine, but what really bothers me is the squirrelly antics from the back end when cornering enthusiastically. It really feels unsettled and doesn't exactly inspire confidence!

Could this be monte not having rear weights like vrs?

Also re tyres all 3 skodas ive had pull to the left

Ive drove 2 other cars this week - renault and a peugeot ( one brand new) and neither car pulls left

Have just got used to it by now I suppose

Take the rear weights off a vRS Hatch and the back end does not go all funny.

Remove the Spare Wheel, Jack and Rear Weights and it does not go all funny,

yet that is 45 kg less weight at the rear 'Unladen/Kerb Weight' than when it left the factory.

40 KG less at the rear than a vRS Estate then, or 20kg if you leave the spare in.

Maybe remove the weights and carry 2 spares sometimes.

(A Polo comes with the Battery in the Boot & no spare wheel as standard, but then its still a heavier car Unladen.)

It might be an idea for someone to try putting Rear weights on and a spare wheel in and in a squirrelly Monte and see if they feel any difference or makes an improvement.

Pics on the right not mine, from an Evo article on the vRS.

Pics on the Left pinched from an Thread on here on removing the weights.

Holy cr4p! I didn't realise they ballasted them up!

Might have been money spent better by Skoda on something worth while rather than 'adding weights' and then costing the owner more in Road Tax

because it had its Euro test at the same Unladen weight as an Estate car. (5kg more actually by their figures)

Amazing how they do not rust, Nicely finished items.

unlike Brake Drums on cars with them,

Discs, Wheels, and Wiper Blade Arms etc on many of the Skoda Vehicles.

My vRS has done 5k miles now and the pull to the left has reduced, presumeably since the tyres have bedded in,and now I would call it barely noticeable.

On the other hand I've just been out in the 350z today and, hands off, that tracks totally true and straight.

Just been reading that this was a problem with certain old jags and as time has gone on the specialists have learn the correct suspension adjustments to correct this. However, back in the day, it was alleged that when a new car went back to the dealership with this a common solution was to return it to the customer with the nearside tyre pressures 2/3psi higher than the offside!!!

My 2007 HTP 70 Mk11 did pull to the left and once a four wheel alignment was done it did improve to the point I never really noticed it. My newer 1.2 Tsi drives true and straight. It is strange how some pull to the left, There is quite a bit on this site from people saying there car does or doesn't pull.

Torque steer is relative to how hard the car is accelerated. Perhaps those people that aren't noticing significant 'pulling to the left' drive more conservatively?

Our Monte pulls left despite a realignment and since the dealer further swapped the tyres round from rim to rim, we now have a very slight wheel wobble at 70 as well.

Recently took it over to Europe and discovered that oddly on a right camber it drives pretty straight and true, with the steering wheel sitting correctly but back on a left or even a neutral camber it defiantly wants to turn left and you find the steering wheel is right hand down with trying to keep it straight :wonder:

Currently waiting for another opportunity for the dealer to try again, as otherwise its a great car.

What I,and most others, are talking about is NOT torque steer.

It's about cruising on a straight road with the car incapable of going straight without a degree of steering correction to make it do so.

When conditions are right I enjoy asking for maximum acceleration.

Ah ok, point understood. In that case my Monte drives straight as die under normal circumstances.

Mine goes in on monday as pulling to the left i have to keep down pressure on the wheel if i let go i head to the kerb. Previous dealer told me some are set up for eu roads as camber runs right thats why it pulls to the left to much

Might explain why ours was easier to drive in France and Switzerland than it is here in the UK :wonder:

I have had a answer from the dealership with regards the pulling to the left. The tracking arm on the left wasn't set right and the steering wasn't centred. I have the car back and yes there is still a pull but it's nothing like it was.

Now enjoying the VRS to the full and all I can say its an amazing car :-).

Balance weights? Wtf!

Small cars on big wheels. Always tram line.

I used to have a nova on 15" alloys on with more poke than standard and I could travel for about 1/2 a mile with out steering if i placed it into the ruts in the road
