Pop! Black smoke, car wouldn't go over 50mph

Featured Replies

As title says I was driving home Friday got on the motorway got speed for the motorway entrance then heard a pop all of a sudden black smoke coming from exhaust and car wouldn't accelerate over 50mph so I carried on until I could find a safe place to pull over and when I lifted the bonnet see that the top boost pipe had completely disconnected once re attached it worked fine thank god as I was starting to worry it was bigger problems, anyway just wondering if driving it while the pipe was disconnected and smoke flying from the exhaust may have caused any damage to the engine or other parts? New to turbos and boost pipes so sorry if I'm sounding stupid here for worrying as now the car is pulling better!

No, as long as it was only for a short period. You'll probably find it has had a boost leak for a while and now its been reattached properly its stopped it.

Yeah I did have a slight whoosh noise as described on here but just thought I was paranoid about it! Then this week had it in the garage for full service mot and cambelt and waterpump nothing was mentioned off the boost leak so just assumed all was okay but obvisiouly not haha! Cheers for your reassurance anyway thanks

I'd say there needs to be a big write up sticky on this forum about the whoosh sound as it is not normal

Its hard to describe though isnt it. Mine whistles and sometimes people ask if it's suppose to do it, I know it is because I'm use to it. I guess it's like looking for a lump in the shower, get to know your own car and watch out for any changes hahaha

I've tried 4 or 5 Fabia vrsesses and one didn't hiss/ whoosh at all and was a lot faster than all the rest so it must be a design flaw that comes with higher mileage.

since replacing my bottom boost pipe it has reduced significantly but only to a point so I am looking at doing the one that comes out of the turbo.

Mine used to have that whooshing sound when accelerating through about 2000 to 2500 rpm at full throttle. Nothing to worry about, the turbo is doing what it should do and providing full boost, the sound is the air rushing though the pipework. As long as it doesn't get much worse then you should be fine.

My Cordoba PD130 also had a whoosh sound.

Really bugged me as I was certain it wasn't normal.

Can't really hear the turbo at all on the 1.9 PD105.

Same on mine, kept popping off and would whoosh while partly come off.

Easily fixed for <£1 with a few screws. Much much stronger than the crap OEM clips.

you say that but are the cars that have this whooshing sound putting out the expected boost and is the boost climbing up as fast as it should b?

I believe that I get a whoosh because my coupler on the turbo doesn't seal properly once you have driven it hard through the gears a few times as it has heated up... but this won't be proven till that pipe is fixed.

it develops a design flaw with age/mileage?

it's got a design flaw I believe hence why people replace pipes and they eventually start to pop off... compared to a car with just hoses and hose clips
