Columbus - TMC?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just recently noticed that the TMC function appears to have stopped working on my yeti? I assume this is the case as over the last few days it always said no messages over the course of the journeys?

I have checked the settings it appears to be set to auto for the TMC stations; the only option from auto is capital, which I assume is one of the stations detected.

Any ideas? I do recall using this TMC in the past which has worked. But not something I've look at much until recently?

Try having a look at TMC when there is no route set. This should throw up something somewhere.

If not, then I suspect there is a problem somewhere. Possibly, and most likely, its the aerial.

That's what I've been trying all this time. I have tried both route and no route set....both cases there's nothing shown?

Is anything I can do to verify this? I mean, radio stations all look fine?

Do I need to do some kind of reset etc?

Have you got radio reception on both bands: AM & FM?

Can you check radio signal strength (hold down the 'Setup' button until the 'Radio' menu appears select 'FM' (or 'AM') and there will be info about the strength of the current channel. Use the arrow hard buttons in the top left to flick through the stations.

Can you access the 'hidden' menu? The one after the radio menu?

  • Author

Yeah flick thu a couple of stations across both bands and they are getting reception.

Checked the signal as advised, the bottom bar varies depending on the station; some stronger than other I.e 70-98%...

I also did the 3 button soft reset without any change? Any ideas?

From that info it seems as though you are getting radio reception fine.

Can you go through the menus as follows:

Setup > Traffic Information > Favourite TMC Station

and see what's listed there.

I have mine set to 'Automatic' and it seems to work.

Possibly the radio station selected is not broadcasting the info.

Do you have 'Classic FM' tuned in at all? I gather this is one of the few that does broadcast TMC messages. Try putting that as a preset radio station and see if that makes any difference.

Press then TMC button: it took about 8-10 seconds for mine to come up, but I can see 12 messages all within 30 or so miles from my current location.

Possibly there is a distance limit that the Columbus uses so as not to bombard the HU with too much information (only guessing).

Maybe there are no incidents reported within the distance from you (obviously if the last statement is rubbish then ignore this).

It's just auto updated to show 15 messages now and extending the range.

Just exploring possibilities and free options to try to rule out anything major.

Favourite TMC stations only has 2 options, auto or capital.

I've tried both with no joy.

If classical does tmc it's certainly not listed as a selected tmc station.

Only one is capital which I presume has detected.

Also in radio under setup, the tmc status is detected as capital.

Also looked at the audio section with maxidot display. Regardless of what

Radio station I select I see the word TMC shown. I'm guessing this is an

Indicator that TMC is enabled?

I have been on the tmc screen for more of the journey 20-30mins and no update?

I will try setting up classical as a preset station to see if it makes any difference?

I have also tried unscrewing and screwing the aerial back on but no difference?

Will report back later.

Here's some relevant bits about TMC in the UK:

United Kingdom[edit]

The private company iTIS Holdings[45] provides a commercial TMC service iTMC in the United Kingdom. It is broadcast nationally on Classic FM and other commercial radio stations. ITIS provides traffic data on RDS-TMC to major automotive companies (BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford, Renault, Jaguar, Land Rover and others). The price of the service is included in the price of the car or navigation system.

This system uses Floating Vehicle Data, which include positional information from over 160,000 fleet vehicles fitted, The data is complemented by journalistic or "Incident" data provided by Trafficlink. Trafficlink is owned by ITIS and provides traffic and travel bulletins to BBC Radio and to over 95% of the UK commercial radio stations. Incident data includes road works, accidents and closures.

Within the United Kingdom TMC services are offered as pay services. As such they are currently carried by commercial radio stations rather than by the BBC, a public service broadcaster. The BBC charter prohibits it from carrying a commercial service.

Hopefully this illustrates why I suggested ensuring Classic FM is tuned in. Can you receive Classic FM as a radio station? Which commercial radio stations are near your location? Do they broadcast TMC messages?

I have it tuned in, but it doesn't show in my TMC list: I have Automatic, Free-FM and one of the local commercial radio stations that I never listen to and don't have as a preset.

Yes I'm able to get FM Classic no probs. The signal is very strong 98%. I've tuned this to one of the preset numbers as advised. On the way back home, I had this station on but unfortunately no change in the TMC alerts :(

However like you, FM Classic is not listed as a TMC station for selection. The only one available TMC station for selection is Capital for me. I have this radio station preset and what interesting is that the signal of this station appears to vary quite a bit. The signal bar appears to fluctuate constantly as I'm driving, can be from 60% to 90%. The so called RDS number appears to change from time to time as well. I assume this may appear to suggest that Capital is not as strong a signal compared to Classic FM? Could it be why I'm not seeing any TMC alerts?

It's unfortunate that no other TMC stations have been detected for selection. Again not sure if this suggest a aerial issue?

When TMC worked in the past, I can't recall if other TMC stations were available?

I assume a soft reset could not have caused TMC to stop working?

You mention another hidden menu previously. How do you get access to this?

Any other ideas would be appreciated?

Edited by Hyeung

A soft reset is highly unlikely to have caused this issue. Why did you do a soft reset of the Columbus?

The fluctuating strength of the signal is nothing to worry about. If it's at 60-90% most of the time, that's pretty good. Reception appears to drop down to 'Mono' at around 40%. RDS strength will also fluctuate.

On the radio menu, there should be two headings: one says 'ANT1' the other 'ANT2'. Do both of these say 'ON' after them or is one off?

The ANT2 is Antenna 2 and is the second aerial. This handles FM reception and also TMC. If this shows 'Off' then you've got a break in the aerial connections somewhere or a dodgy aerial.

ANT1 handles FM & AM reception. The HU can switch between the two aerials to choose the strongest reception without any noticeable effect. It's called 'diversity switching'.

Where is your aerial? Roof? Rear window? Side window?

What aerial do you have? Standard whip? Newer shark fin/stubby combo?

have you updated the maps recently?

I'm in South London and get Capital heart & Choice. Classic is no more. I switched on the car and as soon as the Columbus had booted up I had 23 traffic messages. It is set to auto.

I did a soft reset quite a few months back. Can't recall exactly why, whenever it was just down to curiosity or the system had froze at the time. Other than this I have not change anything since, and no maps were updated recently.

I was just curious if such reset would have cause some setting to be lost, thereby causing TMC to fail? Just guessing?

Within the signal test screen, both ANT1 & ANT2 are on.

I'm up in Scotland Glasgow. Would be handy to know anyone on here that's also Glasgow based and has Columbus with TMC....just curious what the default TMC stations detected?

It's the newer shark fin with standard aerial located in the rear roof. A 2012 62 plate.

Also TP appears to work fine, as i noticed an interrupted announcement.

And versions are - 3T0035680E

HW ver - H71

SW ver- 4120

West Europe

Navteq

Map ver - 7690

Not sure how up to date the above versions are?

Also tried a factory reset on the radio option. But no change. Should I try a full factory reset on everything ?

Hmmm running out of ideas now? Do you not think its aerial related or just a software glitch? But would have thought a soft reset would have sorted it....? Sighhh

Edited by Hyeung

I'm beginning to think that it's software related.

My (new) Columbus has SWversion 5238 and Map version 7918 HDD if that helps at all.

  • Author

Further suggestions anyone?

Software update?

Map version 7690 = v.8, so pretty recent (v.9 maps haven't officially hit Skoda yet or may have only just done so).

Software 4120: doesn't officially exist as far as I can tell! 4020 is the latest. (http://www.my-gti.com/3374/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information)

How 'new' is the one with 5238 firmware? If it's in a MkIII Octavia, then the firmware probably won't apply to MkII units.

Could try disconnecting the battery or pulling the fuse and leaving for 30mins+ to see if it resets itself!

My versions above are as delivered in my May 2013 L&K Yeti.

It seems that 5028 firmware is out there but is 'paid for' software as it is protected and linked to the buyer (somehow).

It seems as though a software hack may be needed to run this on early Columbus models.

An update on this issue....decided to give TMC a try yesterday morning; to my surprise it kicked back into life!

I did nothing different!? Later checked it again on the way back home from work and still working!

The only TMC stations options was still auto or capital. And ofcourse the TMC station it tuned into was still capital.

I can only assume there were issues with this broadcasting station in the past? Either that i have an intermittent fault? Will continue to monitor? Thanks for the advice to date! Hopefully my unit will continue to behave...

Cheers,

Hung

I have the same issue on the rns315,and Vw claim there isn't an issue.

I can drive around all day, covering several counties, and it says no traffic updates.

Get your dealer to raise a DIS report of you suffer this issue. The more who do, the more likely a software fix from the radio manufacturers Continental
