Blimey! 4G is rather whizzy (when it works)

Featured Replies

Recently I got an upgrade (and a stunning deal for once) to an S4 moby and 4G. Now unfortunately I can't actually get 4G downstairs in my house, although it does work upstairs at a reduce signal strength..

Anyhoo, I had about 1.5gb of pictures to chuck up into my Flickr account tonight and figured on the usual 4-5 hours to upload it all (I get about 11mb/s downstream and 840mb/s upstream). But then.........I thought, why not try the Wi-Fi hotspot tether on my phone and see if it is quicker. Well it is! it took a smidge over 35 minutes to complete and that was with a reasonably poor signal on the phone.

Did a quick speed check and saw 30mb/s down and nearly 10mp/s up :) I have seen faster when I am near a mast, but even so, I was quietly impressed. Phone isn't even too warm and the battery hardly flinched.

haha, you'll chew through your allowance by thursday :D 4G aint worth it ;)

the more they 'give' the more you use; the more you use, the more they reap.

I've got nearly 16GB to get through by the end of the week :) Free Samsung S4, unlimited calls and texts, 50 inclusive MMS and 16GB of data all for £42 s month. I am quite happy

I haven't found anywhere which is a 4G area yet.

I'm on a 4G price plan also after EE offered a FREE upgrade and NO additional costs if I stick within the 1.5GB allowance, but I may step up to the next level as it's only £5 more a month.

I'll see how things pan out once 4G in switched on in this area.

Amanda, which area are you in please?

We haven't got 3g yet....and in most places we haven't got any g at all

It's not very good when you can't find the G spot is it!

I'm in Stretford, Manchester. Unfortunately because of EE/Orange/T-Mobile 'Optimising' their coverage, they took my local 3G mast away. They claim the government forced this move as they have too many masts. Not convinced by that argument.

The annoying thing is, you would think that as I live in Manchester I would have great coverage (my previous 14 years with Orange gave me just that). It is a built up area and it is the 2nd biggest city in the country. It is also rather flat, so line of sight is pretty good to any high point that an aerial is placed. but the result is my phone has to have the 4G turned off when I am in the house as if it grabs the 4G mast miles away, it hangs on until the death and as a result it can mean my signal strength goes down to virtually nothing, resulting in missed calls. As I am self employed and 90% of calls are about work this is not a happy situation to be in.

At the moment EE are looking into options, including giving me my own 3G local transmitter that connects via my interweb, but looks like a small Cell Mast to my phone. But, I reckon anyone in my local vicinity and on the EE networks, would find their phones suddenly connecting to my interweb via this 'mini cell' and I don't want my broadband slowed and more importantly, I don't want anyone doing anything illegal with their phone (downloading inappropriate stuff etc) which would then be sent to their phone via my mini-cell and hence my personal broadband. At the moment the mini-cell can't be locked sown for my use only.

Does EE not still offer UMA?

My crackberry is on EE and will automatically route calls through my wifi when its turned on.

Managed 46 mbs down and 51mbs up today! Quite whizzy if I am not mistaken :D

I feel you pain. A reliable phone signal would be good......

I'm on EE 4G and noticed that it is definitely improving. Been with them since November when they turned it on.

I was in Manchester on Tuesday night and was bored, so watched Netflix on the iPad, tethered to my iPhone. Worked a treat.

I have never got anywhere near my allowance yet in 7 months, as when at home I use my wifi.

If I do have problems, uploading work, it is soooo much faster than BT infinity with uploads. In the region of 10x or more. Download speed at home is about the same as BT infinity at around 36mbs.

allowance..? do you live in the olden days?

How on earth did you get that much data for that price?

But 3G was really really quick, until everyone was on it, and then it was dog slow. Once everyone is on 4G it'll be crawling along.

I'm on T-Mobile with a Xperia Z 500 mins, unlimited txts and unlimited data for £26 p/m.

They rang me last week to try and get me to upgrade.

They checked my usage and it was between 4gb and 6gb a month. He then tried to sell me a 6gb plan for £46 p/m. I actually laughed at the poor guy!

I cannot live with a data limit. I've used crazy amounts before and don't want to worry about running out!

It would be like having it on your home broadband,  How 2005.

Unthinkable.
