Tyre sizes

Featured Replies

My tyres are 245/40/R18.

My spare is 205/55/R16.

It's my understanding that other Superb II are running on 205/55/R16, yet there is a big (3%) difference between the overall diameters & circumferences.

I've worked out that 205/60/R16 would be a very close match to the diameter of my 18s.

Is this setup somehow on VCDS or Maxidot?

My Car is on 225/45/R17 94W, on calisto alloys, however I use 205/55/R16 for winter tyres, and as far as I am aware, these sizes give the same result in relation to KPH / MPH.

I think there is a setting in Maxidot for winter tyres. That might sort you out.

No, this setting only gives you an option of setting up a "bong" at specific speed, so that you know that you've just exceeded allowable 120mph and the tyre will blow :sun: (it is allowed to use lower speed ratio tires for winter)

My tyres are 245/40/R18.

Sorry for stupid question but are you 100% sure that width of your tire is 245???? I don't think it's "legal" size for insurance purpose...

There is!!! iirc

Like the holiday setting (europe driving) etc

Yes allows you to adjust the reported speed by a certain % up and down if the rolling radius is different to standard iirc

As per above, unless you've changed them you have 225/40/18 tyres

Here u go!

Is the next screen after that the one where you set the speed reminder?

Dunno.

Wot speed reminder?

U mean a preset speed and it bongs?

Yeah, the thing that lmb mentioned.

Yeah, the thing that lmb mentioned.

Let me check the manual ....

A bit more complicated according to manual :

Sorry pic lop-sided :-(

Why dont you think its legal size for insurance?

It is if they have been told.

As for the 205/55/16 spare wheel it is used as a Get you home wheel and when used with larger wheels the speed is limited.

Setting Warning when reached 30mph...

If you need a speed warning / bong / buzzer to tell you if you are going over a certain speed then surely you aren't really paying attention to your speed???

@ruffday

I reckon (maybe wrongly) that your car comes with some "certified" wheel sizes and only these are "legal". I base my opinion on my insures (Skoda) because they asked if my winter tires are standard size allowed by manufacturer. They also mentioned 2% difference bracket - so I'm guessing again one of these factors make your wheels legal.

Someone gave a link to such document a couple of months ago and I am guessing 245/40R18 cannot be found in such certificate because as it was mentioned before there is 3% difference between standard and fitted wheel size.

I sometimes travel through Germany. I have one reminder for 85mph because this is legal in my destination country and another reminder for winter tires, so that during winter I don't go full speed on them :giggle:

However I find this very strange how the speedometer is calibrateted at 10mph increases untill 80mph and then going to 20mph. Therefore it's very hard to tell if you are going ~85mph or 90mph at a glance.

The winter setting does nothing for speed correction. That is handled by a setting in vcds.

My Scout 225/50r17 tyres are the same od and the spare was the same 205/55r16. I changed the spare to a 205/60r16 so I can travel a decent distance at normal speed on it.

The 205/55r16 winters are to allow sufficient clearance for snow chains.

The cars come from the manufacturer with certain size wheel and tyre fitted but if you fit a different size it is not illegal but you need to tell your insurance company.

I must say that I have never checked with my insurance about winter tyres as I just fit them to my standard rims so as far as i am concerned they dont need to know.

It's official, I am a total numpty! I've checked the tyres again and they are indeed 225/40.

This means there's only a 5mm diameter difference between my 18s and the 205/55R16. Phew!
