yellow steering wheel symbol.

Featured Replies

As title after cleaning the car with doors open and radio on i had to bump start the car. Now the traction control , tire pressure monitor light is on as well as the yellow steering wheel symbol and the steering is a little weighty. Oh yeah its a 07 vrs octavia

Try driving at slow speed in a straight line for about 50-100m. That usually clears the steering light after what is effectively a battery disconnect.

My battery is dying, so I have to jump it on occasion.

Go for a drive around the block, the lights will all turn themselves off. Its the same deal as the automatic window up/down - you need to put all 4 windows all the way up and all the way down so it can "learn" where they are, so it can do it itself, automatically. :)

On some cars, when this happens you need to turn the steering fully from lock-to-lock. Presumably this is similar to having to wind the windows all the way up and down.

Yep, I had this.

Turn the steering wheel to the right, hold for 10 seconds, then fully to the right, hold for 10 seconds then the light will go out. You will hear a clunk from the rack on each lock as it is resetting the steering dampening :)

Now that you mention it, I do remember feeling the steering powering all the way through to the lock! Then after it gets there, lock isn't a sharp hit - its dampened!

My driveway involves lock-to-lock reverse manourve so that would be that I'm guessing. ;)

But going for a drive makes sure that all the other systems reset themselves and that nothing is actually an issue. :)

Done everything possible and still no joy. Took it to get those diagnostics done and the fault is steering position sensor fault. It won't let him clear the fault of let him initialise the steering? Looking to trade it in as we speak lol

Again I had this happen with mine too, it wouldn't reset! You are only getting a fault is VCDS as you can't get it to calibrate due to the ECU being confused. Called my VAG specialist and he told me these instructions...

1. Undo the battery again overnight to reset everything and but the battery on a mains charger to get it back up to full capacity.

2. Put the battery back on and the steering wheel light will show.

3. Turn if full left, back to centre, full right, back to centre and it should do out.

Doing this procedure on a discharged battery may not work as the ECU's are not getting enough power output from the battery that makes them do all sorts of funny things! A jump started battery will not have enough power in it and if the battery was drained dead flat the alternator won't be pushing enough amps to bring it back to life, hence why a mains trickle charge is needed.

Also, CANBUS cars hate jump starts - again due to the higher than normal voltage a jump start puts through its system.

Just ignoring the problem after trying every solution possible and driving to work seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for your help lads

Had the same issue over winter due to a short in the battery compartment / fuse box. Battery died each morning and presented the same lights. If overnight charged it was happy. Replaced battery = happy days
