V5 Document and Insurance

Featured Replies

Got a letter yesterday from my insurer asking me to confirm details of my car was correct (which it was) and asked it I could send a copy of my V5 document to them to enable the insurance/police database to be confirmed. This is the first time I have been asked to do this in all my years of driving. Are there changes afoot in maintaining this database? or perhaps something more sinister going on.

Never heard of this before?

I've heard of sending proof of NCB but not the V5 :wonder:

I have spoken to the insurers and apparently it is the DVLC who are requesting this for vehicles with private plates (which I have) to confirm details to match with what would be the original plate if it had been used. It then allows them to allocate a plate number if the vehicle is changed in the future and an appropriate re registration is required.

That makes a bit more sense, at first it sounded like the snail mail equivalent of online "phishing".

That must be if it was bought new and the private number put on at first registration, if it had an ordinary number at first reg then a private one surely it would revert back to the original when being sold and the owner keeping the private reg. Please cmiiw.

My recent L&K was a first registration with a new personalised plate and I have not been asked by the insurance for the v5.

Nor me

I think this sounds a bit wrong, we should'nt have to supply reg details, the DVLC knows all, a chassis number even tells them what the reg is or should be, I would be a bit wary sending off any details. Or contact DVLC and find out for sure.

Not heard of this either and I've had a few cars that would quality.

Odd.

I agree with ^^, had cherished plate put on at first registration on a number of vehicles with no problems. All that happens when you remove it at sale is the vehicle is given an age related plate.

Exactly what I was told by NFU it relates to vehicles that have not had a reg number allocated by DVLC first and DVLC are asking for the full vehicles details for their records

This sort of happened to me when I bought my last Yeti. Traded in my old one, got my private reg put on, sent off my RFL for refund on outstanding months, got letter from DVLA to say that they didn't recognise my traded in vehicle. Irate phone call, refund arrived. Turned out that my traded in Yeti was bought almost immediately (wish I'd sold it privately now !) and new owner had his private plate put on so Yeti 1 only had its original Reg for a day or two and DVLA computer hadn't caught up ! so nothing to worry about I think.

DVLC don't ask anyone for details they already have them all. Get in touch with them to find out why you have been asked to do this, as you seem to be the only one.

It is not DVLA that are asking - it is the insurer. They have a problem submitting the new details to MIB. I've known this happen when a private plate was previously on a different car and was removed/sold after the car it was on was written off.

Surely if you have a V5 document (thats come FROM the DVLA) then they already hold the details.

I'm at a loss to know why they want a copy of the V5 that they have previously sent you, unless someone has screwed up and lost/deleted the information at their end, in which case they should just be honest and tell you. :(

EDIT: Should have read all the posts.............. DOH!!!!
